Why do you hunt public land?

Access to private land here is expensive, more expensive than I'm able to pay. I like deer hunting but, to be brutally honest, I've never liked it enough that I'd want to pay the equivalent of a couple of house payments to do it.

Preface----I live in Rural NC....where public hunting land is not the "norm". The closest I know of from here (and only because I asked on here, one day) is over an hour from here. I literally know NOTHING about public land hunting in NC.
Also...here....it's fairly easy to find a woodlot or a farm to hunt. With above average deer densities (in our state)....finding privat ehunting lands is usually a few (if not one) stop-and-knock scenarios away.
So....you guys who hunt most public land.....do you do so:
1. Out of necessity. I can't gain access to private land to hunt. I've tried.
2. I would rather hunt public land....as it's the road less traveled. I could hunt private lands....but it's too competitive and crowded.
3. Other reason(s).
I hear a lot of people talking about hunting public land....and I wanted to ask "why"?

The only reason I hunt Public is because it is impossible to get any private land within a few hours of Chicago. Its not fun hunting public land around Chicago. Too many people trying to get on too little land. I have private land to hunt, but it is 6 hours away. Guess I'll just put up with the crowds until I can find (I should say afford!
) something private.

I hunt public land for advantage.
The more properties I have.. the greater my advantage as a bowhunter.
Every property whether private or public give me endless possibilities on where I can hunt that day.. or even that next day. As a bowhunter I can never have to much land.
If we all believe a whitetail buck lives in a home range thats about 1,000 to 2,000 acres generally (it says generally people).. than why not have as much of that acreage as possible.
Give me the options. I only see it as an advantage to hunt public. I've yet to come across a piece of public that I didn't believe would hold a good buck during a particular time of the season.

Not around here, Duke.....or at least I don't think so. That's a HUGE area. If this is true........I'm flabbergasted.
1,000 acres is only like less than 1.5 square miles.. thats not very large.
If you believe a whitetail buck lives only on 300 acres of land you are greatly fooling yourself.
I can walk a slow pace at about 1 mile in 45 minutes. If anyone believes a whitetail does not travel that distance (especially at night)... well then your understanding of a whitetail is very under-rating of the animal and borders naivete.
I mean no dis-respect when I say that either to anyone as I re-read my post and realized it may have come of harshly.

i think your both right and wrong i have seen where they say deer can and do live on small areas 300 or even less
but in some areas they live on large 1000 plus acres

I do the vast majority of my public ground hunting during the week when the hunter pressure is acceptable. Most of the public ground i hunt hasn't been discovered by the hordes of non-residents, either. Between what private ground i have access to and the public i hunt, i don't have to worry too much about burning any one place out.

When you put it tha way.....I am mistaken. I know the deer I hunt travel close to a mile in one direction.....to eat, during the early fall (to soy bean fields). Yeah.....that isn't that much land.
Seems they have every reason to leave the area I can hunt them in......but not many reasons for others to come into it.
I do have does, though.....so I guess it could be worse.
Flabbergasted? Nope. Just plain mistaken.
