First off I dont know anyone who is perfect. There are a lot of hunting shows that wouldnt even have showed this hunt. Lets see you make this shot at a cape buffalo coming straight toward you. Then chase after an injuried buffalo to finish him off with a shot once again when he is coming right at you. The animal went right down on the second shot. Easy to bash sitting on the couch watching it on TV....

I didn't see the show but what happened on the first shot? Was it charging then or standing broadside? These are mean tough animals. My dad went to Africa in the 70's when he was working for BenPearson. They filmed the hunt and made a movie. When they shot theCape Buffalo it turned into complete chaos. The charge was on!

Prior to reading this thread I read the one about whether we've missed more shots high or low, and another on missing the first shot and then connecting with followups, six pages total........hmmmmm

I admit when I saw that I figured it was what he was trying to do. To brain him or something. Like shooting a grizzley in the eye socket.
Where exactly should a person shoot a charging cape buffalo with a bow? That's just a bad scenario all around.

People I'm not trying to insult the man's character or to say that I've never made a bad shot but you can bet that I would never show it on a nationally televised show touting what a great hunter that I am.

Phil Phillips is from Montrose, Colorado - he has the local archery pro shop in Canon City do his bow tuning. Great guy. One of the things I admire about him is that he doesn't seem to do anywhere near as much editing as the other bow hunting celebrities. He leaves in the bad shots - missed opportunities - even when it makes him look kinda foolish. It would be so easy to cut out the bad parts, sneak in some footage from another hunt, and make yourself look good in the eyes of the world. Phil won't do that.

Yep...the show was about looking back at his five most memorable hunts. These hunts included a whitetail that was shot in the neck from 50+ yards after it whirled around as the arrow approached...a cape buffalo that was shot in the nose!...and a wounded grizzly bear (arrow) that he and another guyended up finishing offwithtwo shot guns.

Lets see. Even I am questioning the shot/shots from what most of you are talking about in the thread. Lets try to question what his body was going through before he made the shot. A cape buffalo rushing at you is gonna create a large amount of stress. Stress has a funny way of closing down vision, increasing heart rate pumping adrenalin into your system, shutting down fine tuned motor skills needed to make an accurate shot, and creating sloppy gross motor movements. And lets not forget, decision makingis extremely effected. Yes the shot was stupid, but did he do it out of selfdefense, because it was the only thing he could think of at the time? Nobody knows. I would geuss if a huge monster like that was coming after meI would be running away, or emptying my 45-70 into it like he should have been. I beleive hunting this animal with a bow is idiotic, but some guys need to learn the hard way. I didn't see the show. And from what it sounds like I would turned it off as well. I am not defending the guy, just trying to put in perspective what may have made his odd decision.
If I recall agreat huntingpersonality was assualted bya cape buffalo on a hunt over there. That was with a rifle.I think he died andI wish i could remember his name. His friends when back on a hunt to commerate him. Was on TV. Just cant remember the name.

I see a lot of guys on T.V. that must think the viewer are dumber than a rock. Uncle Ted is really bad for that as well. I don't know how many times I have seen place a terrible shot on an animinal, no recovery footage of that animinal and then talk about how great the shot was. What I don't understand is the people that are hiring these guys to host a show. You say Phil Phillips is going to be hostage 2-3 new shows next year? Have they not seen what his shows are like?
