Bucks and scrapes
#11
Also Jeff, most of the smell comes from the tarsal gland after the buck pisses on its hocks (washing the scent onto the scrape). This accumulates in a scrape after muliple uses - and if you have enough scrapes in a small area you can smell the whole area downwind! I whitnessed it for the first time last season - I could smell the top part of a long skinny draw easily 100 yards down wind. I sat there once with a camera (tagged out)and saw 3 mature bucks in onemoring. It was insane.

I know what you mean Schultzy. The last 15 yrs it has gotten worse instead of better where I hunt. Everyone just shoots what they want and when they want. Kinda hate the good old days are no more, when I used to be able to ground hunt and catch good bucks off guard. Now, they are few and far between and on guard at all times it seems. They walk around picking up acorns with their hooves so they can keep their eyes in the trees and ahead of them.

Thats cool Joe!! I know exactly what your talking about when it comes to the smell. It was just like a door slammed me in the face. Kinda reminded me of elk hunting when your walking and then all of a sudden BAMB, I smell elk!!
