No, I'm saying a compound will keep it's energy for a longer distance than a CB, and maintain a more horizontal plane for a longer distance than a CB. By the way, check out post #33 in the "Crossbow come back" thread. I'd like to hear what you think.
Ahhh...

Are you reffering to your post ? About NJ ? I responded to that. Heck, I wrote a book.

If this isnt the thread you're talking about, then I dont know exactly where too look...
Yes DropTine, that's the one, I must have spaced/missed your post. I MUST be getting old.;):D:D

What is the effective draw length and brace height of a cross bow? Is the shorter powerstroke the reason for it to be less efficient?

Actually, from what I have read, the big diff isintheaxle toaxle length and a CB's inability to store energy like a compound does. I'm sure there are folks on herebetter equipped to offer a more detailed explanation.

DropTine, thanks for the time you took writing that "book":D and venting, which is always a good thing. Those are some intresting facts reguarding your region, despite some of them being negative, development/poaching.[:@][&o]It is a shame good things can't remain the same. Change sucks, I've always had a problem (I use this word loosely) with it.[:'(]Thanks again.

Most Xbows have @ a 20" draw stroke which seems like less but remember they have 175-225lb draw weights and throw 400 gr arrows. Brace Height means nothing in a Xbow.

Illinois allows anyone 62 yrs. and older to use one and disabled persons......I hope it stays that way.

I used a RC300 when it was the hottest crossbow around; back when my shoulder was in bad shape. I've since had surgery (now use compound) but had already given the crossbow away because of the very short range (horrible trajectory). Accuracy was pretty good, butevery 4th arrow, or so, was a flyer - even if I waxed after every shot. It was also very noisy when it 'went off". Very loud metallic sound "THWANGGGGG).

You should double check your Excal book on those numbers. Excal's largest CB has a power stroke of 16.5" with a 20" 430 grain arrow. The smaller models only have a 13.5" stroke and go down to 370 grains if I remember right. Some CBs, like the ones in the 300 dollar price range only have a stroke of 12" on a 150 pound CB. Its alot of poundage, but the short limbs and the short stroke eat it all up.

Also, surprises me hearing you say brace height means nothing? And you have a Excal. Brace height means everything! It affects POI, FPS and string life! As soon as my groups open up BH is the first thing I look at, and it usually is a .25 inch low, put a few twist in sting and POI is back on track. Also low BH eats up the string from it slapping to far forward.

There soon to be legal every where. Here in Minnesota you can use them during the Archery season if you qualify for a permit (health reasons). Otherwise during the gun season there legal to use. I'm not a big pusher for crossbows, there not a bow by any means in my book. Keep them in the gun season if there going to be made legal and keep them out of the Archery season. There more of a gun then a bow to me.
Cleary you haven't hunted with one. I just started a thread in the crossbow forum about the unique challenges that crossbow hunters face. I encourage you to take a look and think you'll soon realize that they are far differnt from a gun.

The only advantage a crossbow presents to the hunter is the luxury of not having to draw. And while I realize that is a major difference.. the disadvantages presented to crossbow hunters level the playing field IMO.

Don't forget the scope aspect of crossbows, and their light gathering properties. This was not mentioned in that thread, or any of the posts pertaining to that thread.;):D

There's advantages and disadvantages to any weapon you take a field. Say what you want Rock, I respect your opinion and ways being you have good class from what I've seen from you on this forum. With saying that though I will never be convinced in saying there a bow. My reasons are fairly simple and not very complicated.

1.You said it yourself you don't have to draw the bow. Thats the biggest reason in my book.
2.You hold it up to your shoulder like a gun and look down the scope and pull the trigger and launch your bolt.

They make look like a bow some what but there operated just like a gun.
