Effective range of crossbows are the same as modern compounds.

I have no issues with them either. As I said earlier, I hunted with one when they became legal here in Pa. However, and this is STRICTLY MY OPINION, I believe that the fact that they are always at full draw, there is an advantage right there. You're doing away with the need to draw it, and eliminating that movement/detection possibility. The scope I have on mine adds an advantage as well, making it even more gun like/too easy. This is why I don't use it any more. I took a lot of deer with it in a short span of years. Again, onlyMYOPINION.

There soon to be legal every where. Here in Minnesota you can use them during the Archery season if you qualify for a permit (health reasons). Otherwise during the gun season there legal to use. I'm not a big pusher for crossbows, there not a bow by any means in my book. Keep them in the gun season if there going to be made legal and keep them out of the Archery season. There more of a gun then a bow to me.

The only thing I can add and BC said it for the most part is Ohio and Arkansas have thirty years of data to prove that a CB will not affect deer hunting. And the recent states that have jumped on board have new good data to show that there will not be a onslaught of hunters hit the woods and kill all the deer. The only thing that a CB affects is vertical bow sales, and that is what it is always about, money!
Here are a couple of maps to show what states cureently have CB use and what other states are doing. The map is a few years old and a few states have changed.
