diehard's turkey hunting update
Well I did not get a turkey but I had some very close calls. Alarm goes off friday morning at 3:45 get up eat, drive to hunting spot, am in blind by 4:45. Heard a bunch of gobbles butthey where all really far away. Then at about 7 I heard one in the bottom field below me. So I got out of the blind and tried stalking it. Well1 hour later I was within 50 yards and readying for the shot. Then the hen he was with just walks off and he follows her. Then I go back up to my blind and there are 2 hens checking out my decoys. They see my and spook. Then I go to school.
Saturday morning I get up at 4 and go up to my shooting house. Had 8 turkeys gobbling off the roost. Then I called in a hen and then the hen started yelping and soon had 2 big long beards hot on her trail. They came past me at 55-60 yards and were so into that hen that they were oblivious to my effortsto get him in. I saw a couple more toms that morning but they all were henned up and 200+ yards away. So that afternoon I made a natural ground blind 20 yards off of the trail the 2 gobblers took that morning.
Sunday morning get up at 4 put on camo and head into the woods. I went and sat in my ground blind. At about 5:30 I heard the toms fly down and I let out a series of yelps, clucks and purrs and soon had the toms coming in on a string. They got to the opposite edge of the field I was set up on and stopped. I would call and they would gobble and start to come but then go back into the woods. I made sure I didnt over call so thats not the reason. I tried everything I had including purring and digging in the leaves with my foot. Then I heard them gradually go way around me. Then at about 7 I caught movement behing me and had 3 toms come in behind me in the woods but offered no shot.
I had a great time in the outdoors and learned alot about turkey hunting.
Thanks for reading my book,
