Simp, thanks for the watchful eye. I think it was a huge mistake when they took the Marine security forces off of the carriers.

I know Oceana NAS (Virginia Beach) used to allow bowhunting on the base. I am sure other base do, as well.

I flunked my enlistment physical in '71, so I didn't get the chance to serve. Did my bit for the military by becoming an aerospace machinist and making lots of aircraft and missile parts. Guess most of those missile parts got turned into shrapnel in Desert Storm. Good shootin', flyboys! :)

My son is currently serving in the Army. Just out of basic and is AIT at Ft Gordon in the 442nd Signal Battalion.

Ive been to Okinawa, obviously...How did you like those doors ?
I was conceived in Okinawa, haha. My Pops did a couple of tours in Vietnam in the Army, he was in a mechanical division and has a tattoo that says PIG PEN on it whatever that is all about. My step brother was a Marine and served in Beirut when the embassy thing went down, his son is currently a Marine and deployed somewhere in the Middle East last I heard. My Grandpa was a paratrooper in WWII.
I couldn't enlist due to a heart condition, my hats off to all of you that have served!!

United States Air Force '88-'92 Desert Storm Vet
37th Tactical Fighter Wing, 35th AGS, 561st AMU (Wild Weasels) and later 20th Training Squadron AMU
I was a Hydraulics/pneumatics mechanic on F-4 E and G model fighter/bombers. I was later cross trained into Crew chief and Jet Engine mechanic when the rolled all three jobs into one (rivet workforce)

Then at the end of my enlistment I was on a special transfer team that worked directly under the commander of maintenance for our wing. Our job was to do flyable storage and ready aircraft for sale or decommission as the base was closing down and the F-4's were phased out.

The F-4 wild weasels played a large roll in the Vietnam war and the 561st was one of the first military groups to go to Desert Shield/Storm. The main mission was to locate and take out Surface to Air sites, They also targeted mobile SCUD launchers. A lot of the pilots I got to work with had considerable rank and were Vietnam combat veterans with combat experience and confirmed kills. Very cool guys to talk to. Not like the young know it all pilots.

Paul

Something has always stuck with me since I read it here.....

Huntingson said, once....that he misses the bond that is shared when you place your life in the hands of another man......andhis, with you.

(Major pause, here......because that's REALLY powerful)

I can't fathom that bond.....but I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you guys for what you've sacrificed for us.

Iam humbled.

well, you missed out !!

LOL Well, that was 33 yrs ago so I don't think they were planting food plots ;).

I didn't get to do much stuff other than training or "alert standby"for the 6 yrsI was in. If we weren't training, we were on standby and if we weren't on standby we were getting ready for training and leave was spent reaquainting myself with the family. I was in smallarmy units probably similar to your recon (Rangers in WA and another small unit like that in IT) so we didn't get much free time.

United States Air Force - Retired

January 1986 - September 2006

I do know and probably speak for many active duty and retired military members....kiss the ground you walk on here in the United States. There are many other places in the world which are nice to visit, great dining and shopping, breathtaking sights, and etc., but there is no placelikehome--United States of America.

We aren't perfect over here by any means, but not toobad either. I have been to places during my military time (and I'm sure other military members have too) which have definately opened my eyes up about how thankful one should be living in the USA. Our country is one huge melting potwith many people anddifferent origins....makes you wonder whypeoplecomehere to live.
