By the way, no such thing as a retired Navy Chief. Once a Chief, always a Chief.
Oops! Guess I'd better take that "CPO RETIRED" plate off the front of my truck.:D

Talking about what you don't miss...... riding out a hurricanein 50-60 foot seas on a 438 foot Knox class frigate. That comes to mind.

Ret. USAF 1977 to 1997 (E6)

Currently my son is in the USAF and just re-up'd for another 4 years...when I asked him why he didn't get out after his first 6 years, he said "The job is finished over there and why quit now". God bless those who serve so others maybe free.

Yep.... standing watch on the bridge with a trashbag tied to your belt to puke in... walking down the p-way leaving footprints on one wall and then the other while the deck is going 50 feet up, then 50 feet down.. using sheets to tie yourself to your bunk so you don't get thrown out. Nope, don't miss that at all.

LittleChief, I would know about all that rock and roll stuff. I was on carriers my whole career. Those things don't move much unless it is really nasty out. Yes, I have seen water breaking over the bow (yes, on a carrier), but I can count those days on my fingers.

DT, I would imagine most military people don't consider themselves heroes, but if I were standing with the President (or any other human) and they came under fire, I would shield them as best I could. It is not that I am a hero, but I don't think my life is any more (or any less) precious than theirs. I know what I have done with my life and would be satisfied if my story were to close today. I don't know that the other person has achieved their purpose yet. (Especially the President!)

U.S.NAVY 6 years stationed on the USS donald cook 4 1/2 years now in pensacola instructor duty. Hunted Oceana and yorktown while I was there. Oceana will allow muzzleloaders and shotguns and yorktown will allow shotguns now I am hunting on eglin air force base 285000 acres $20 a year for the permit and you can hunt with any weapon just depending on the season. Now oceana will let you hunt from day 1 with a shotgun as long as your in a shotgun area.

Thats a few acres !

But Eglin is also home to ordinance testing. Ever find deer blown apart in the impact-zone ? We have found deer at Fort Dix impact-zone, well not me..but my friend and his father.

What's a DORM??

ORIGINAL: Paul L Mohr

I'll tell you what I don't miss, working 14 hours then going back to the dorm to crawl into bed and having a hundred or so F-4 fighter jets take off while I'm trying to go to sleep;). Especially when they come off the runway and bank right infront of my dorm!

If I had it to do over again though I would have tried harder to stay in. I would be about ready to retire right now vrs being flat broke and in a job I don't know if I will have next year. I was young and stupid though, and I had just got married and had a kid on the way. I didn't think it would be a very good life for a family.

Uh,a dorm is what we used to call a barracks :D.

Very true my friend, yet we consider everyone else who's served a true hero. Especially someone with a Purple Heart, Silver Star, Three Bronze Stars, and an Army Com.

I know what you mean, CDR. I visited my son at Eglin AFB before he deployed to Iraq with the Red Horse Squadron last month. When I saw where their junior enlisted live, I was blown away.Very nice living quarters.

I am NOT but my son has been in the Navy for 1.5 years now and my daughter is getting everything together to join the Air Force sometime this fall. Holidays should be fun with those two fighting about who is better.
