Those army guys got left out to dry, it makes me sick, you can thank bill Clinton for that
Abosolutely. I know the whole little story behind that conflict.

A friend of mine was with the 10th Mountain Division..He was part of the rescue operation to get teh rangers and delta out.

He said it was CRAZY...the movie(blackhawk down) didnt even come CLOSE to how f-d up that battle was.

He was telling me that it was his first time ever engaged/engaging live targets. He said their humvys started taking fire from top side of a few buildings, he was on foot with soem other soldiers..they took cover in some door ways, scared out of thier minds...this delta guy WALKS up to him and says youd better shoot something(like right out of a movie).

So he just blind fires at the buildings..

he said a few mins later something clicked in his head and he thought "these f-ers are trying to kill ME??"he and the soldiers with him justpopped out and started to engage anything they saw.and hes never been the same since then. He ended up becomming a ranger sniper then worked for a private military contractor for 8 years as a sniper after he got out.

Hes got better stories than I
I don t know about I like your stories. my little brotherbrother just came back for the second time he s a marine they wouldnt let him have any booze over there so I said oh ya took 6 pk of coke drilled a 3/8 hole in the bottom poured the coke out filled them full of rum took the little in dents out of some other cans you know the hole bottom sanded and epoxied in the false bottoms you couldent tell then i put a bottle in the box for them to find sent the box they took the cheap rum out of the box he got the 151 I DID IT 6 TIMES

I do know and probably speak for many active duty and retired military members....kiss the ground you walk on here in the United States. There are many other places in the world which are nice to visit, great dining and shopping, breathtaking sights, and etc., but there is no placelikehome--United States of America.

We aren't perfect over here by any means, but not toobad either. I have been to places during my military time (and I'm sure other military members have too) which have definately opened my eyes up about how thankful one should be living in the USA. Our country is one huge melting potwith many people anddifferent origins....makes you wonder whypeoplecomehere to live.
I got back to the United States of America in 81' after being away for 3 1/2 years. I haven't left it since and do not plan on leaving it again ;).

See, I have a hard time with that. When I came home I was ask to get into civilian clothing to avoid confrontations with protesters. My boys were labeled baby killers and war mongers. Now everyone is a hero, fireman, mailmen.... whatever. America is growing weak and has lost focus. And as far as women in the military... Please... give me a break, it's a PC thing. They can't pick up a wounded buddy on the front line and drag him to safety. They don't have the body structure to do what needs to be done in the heat of battle. Yes there are jobs they can do... let them do it. But don't try to suggest it should be equal footing.

I served in both the Army and Marine Corps from 73 to 95 with a break in service. I turned 21 made E-5 (sgt) and graduated from Drill Instructor school at Parris Island all at the same time. I have shot the 1000 yard line at Quantico, took off running and jumped off of cliffs, and been dumped out the A$$ end of Airplanes. I miss those days.

I'll tell you what I don't miss, working 14 hours then going back to the dorm to crawl into bed and having a hundred or so F-4 fighter jets take off while I'm trying to go to sleep;). Especially when they come off the runway and bank right infront of my dorm!

If I had it to do over again though I would have tried harder to stay in. I would be about ready to retire right now vrs being flat broke and in a job I don't know if I will have next year. I was young and stupid though, and I had just got married and had a kid on the way. I didn't think it would be a very good life for a family.

RE: Whos Military/Former Military ?

I don't think your stupid at all. Other than the dangers of combat, if your job entails that it is hard to beat the benefits unless you have a good skill in the civilian world. Especially if your single, you can spend every penny you have and still have insurance, a place to sleep and a place to eat 3 meals a day. And then if you can manage to stay in long enough you can retire with a pension and enough time left in your life to enjoy yourself.

If I was infantry or something like that I might rethink it simply because of the danger involved, more so if you have a family. However for a support type job where you weren't actually getting shot at all the time its not a bad deal. I didn't like all the B.S I had to put up with in the Air Force, but now that I'm older and look back on it things really were not that bad compared to what I have dealt with after getting out.

I didn't hunt at the time so that really wasn't a factor for me.

There are probably message boards for different posts and bases you could get on to find out what was available in what areas. Probably not much big game hunting opportunities in Iraq though, at least not deer anyway;).

Paul

I hear you captleo. I thought our starting pay in 65 was $72. Oh well, it could have been 68. I remember when they declared me an officer and my pay boomed to $303 a month. I was so happy I went out and bought a Triump(the car). When I went back to Southeast Asia my second tour as a Captain I had jumped to the astounding pay of $16,500 a year. Holy Toledo, I was wealthy. LOL Many years later I remembered my Private pay when I made twice my annualCaptains pay in the market in a day. That was in the boom years. In the down years I remember loosing the same amount in a day.[&:][&:][:'(][:'(] Thinking back, I think we made $67.50 a month in 1965. Officers didn't get a clothing allowance like the EM but I did get Hazzardous Duty Pay/Combat Pay.

Oh, and remember, not all navy dudes float around the water. We can build and blow up sh!t with the best of them. It is good to see the troops get the respect they deserve. Ya Know what I don't miss... I definitely don't miss underway replinishments onboard a ship with a new captain.... talk about nerve racking...
Know what I do miss...
For some unknown reason, I miss sitting on deck at midnight in the gulf.... where its quiet as all getout, and its smooth as silk on the water... not even a ripple, the boat sails along and as you look up, there are more friggin stars than anywhere else in the world..... I (for some unknown reason) miss the gulf at night....
I also miss streamin Tomahawks off the aft missile deck into baghdad:D
