I worked til 11:30pm on Sunday night but I forced myself to get up pre-dawn on Monday morning to experience my first turkey hunt with bow in hand.....I sneak into where I think they are roosting(actually I am so inexperienced I have no idea). I set-up, sun comes up....I hit the call AND BOOM a big gobbler flies out of a pine tree not more than 20 yards away!! HAHAHAAHA! It scared the hell out of me. Five more hours later and not a single sound or sight of a turkey I leave the woods. In the Terminator's voice, "I'll be back".
On a serious note, do you think I should go back to the same place on Friday but stay off a hundred yards or so from where I was, and call again?
Thanks for any tips.

I did not use a decoy. I figured since I am new, that improperly using a decoy would be worse than none at all. Maybe I am wrong. He didn't gobble at all, and I lost him in flight about 60 yards away as he "touched down" somewhere.
I barely struck the box call...figuring I would rather hunt passively than aggressively. I am not really good with the call, but have watched some hunting videos and immitate the calls fairly well. But again, I have no idea when to use certain calls or even what "turkey language" means....I just need alot of help, but I can tell when a gobbler gets into view that I am going to be pumped just like the first time I had a deer in my view.
Kyle...it was really cool becuase I was on steep hill, maybe 5 stories high, looking over a creek and large flat area. I think he was sitting up high looking over a large expanse to monitor the area....but maybe I am wrong?

If he flew that far, you may have spooked him. There islittle to no chance that he didn't hear you come in. I would set up in the area where you think he was going. As for the decoy, not too much to screw up really, just stab the pole in the ground. Good luck!

You got way to close to him. wait and listen for him to start to gobble before you make your move. That way you have an idea of where he is. Set up about 100 yards away and start calling.
