It depends on where at the lung was shot. I had the story about a double lung that went for several hours. arrow was through both lungs, and staid in the deer. but it was shot towards the back of the lung and the wound was totally healed over. we went back in the next morning and had to put a kill shot in the deer. we found the arrow through both lungs. Amazing creatures. He was still alive, but you could tell he was very tired an just laid there to let us shoot him again.

I understand you guys not believing my story, but I swear it is true. Now, I will fully admit that the buck that lived 6 hours was a back of both lungs slice and not a full punch through and obviously wasn't a great shot. However, the 9 point my dad shot in 1991 in Vinton county Ohio went (guesstimated here) 1.5 miles. He was shooting 125gr Thunderheads (3-blade). It was a miracle he found that deer as it piled up under a bush. Both lungs had been punched clean through. Not looking at entry/exit holes, looking at the lungs upon gutting the deer.

You can call me a liar and I wouldn't really blame you b/c if I didn't know any better I would be thinking the same thing, but it happened. I can't explain it but it happened.

When my father worked in the ER he also treated a man who had been shot in the head at point blank range with a .22 and he was sitting up talking. The bullet entered right between the eyes, just above the eyebrows and lodged in the back of his head. He should have died but he didn't. Anything is possible... just improbable.

I can believe that, BUT you did not have a true dbl lunger.. a true dbl lunger, the deer dies in mere seconds. Meaning if you hit the deer square in the lungs it will die in about 4-5 seconds usually.. a deer can run 60 yds in that time easily, think about it, the fastest human in the world can run a 4.098 40 yd dash, just think how much faster a deer can run??

a true double lung shot is a shot that hits both lungs. And a deer can be shot in both lungs and live for a long time. It does not have to be a square in the middle of thge lung. The deer I had the experience with was shot low and towards the back of the lung. but it was through both lungs. It was a "double lung" shot. And the deer lived from 8 in the evening till a little after six in the morning. it was crazy. So much blood loss. But when we came up and found himn he was still breathing. Laid all the way down and didnt even raise his head when we came up. We put another arrow through and killed him then gutted him. I have pictures at home I will post tonight if I find them

The above photo are the lungs and a heart of a buck I shot a couple of years ago. The picture isn't the best but you can plainly see that the broadhead, in this case a Magnus Stinger, center punched one lung, cut open the other one, and past through the edge of the bucks heart. You can see the position of the broadhead on the heart. the two cuts on top and bottom are the bleeder blades and the long wound is the main blade.

I watched this buck run and lay down as I could see him clearly with mybino's from the stand. I timed it and he was alive more than fifteen minutes later. By the time I stalked into position to get another arrow in him he had expired.

More than likely the guy in the story didn't center punch the lungs, but strange things will and do occur out there. I never take anything for granted. I don't feel like the animal is really "done" until his vitals are laying next to him on the ground.[&:]

I have personally seen one live an hour that was double lunged. I didn't shoot him but I was close enough to my buddy to hear the arrow hit. I helped track the deer (still alive when we found him trying to get up but couldn't) and helped skin the deer and he was double lunged. I had another guy that I have a tremendous amount of respect for tell me a similar story. Beileve it or don't believe it but I have seen it. Most of my double lung shots have ended inside of 100 yards but I have had a couple stretch it out. We can't put everything in a box and say this always happens or that always happens because honestly there is never a never and never an always! 99.99% are gonna die quickly but that .01% of the time things happen that we just can't explain. Had I not seen it personally I may have a different opinion.............but I have.
