Yes I remember Greg distinctly saying the deer was still warm when he found him, that quote has never left me, I will remember that forever for some reason..

Guys, thanks for deeming this a good read.

I wrote this as a learning experience. It wasn't fun and I wasn't proud. Nobody likes to admit to a bad shot, especially to an entire internet hunting board. I wrote it basically in real time, not after knowing the end result. Was I worried about not recovering the deer? Sure I was, but I thought it would be a good chance to show others one way of approaching a situation like this. I'm glad it turned out the way it did though!

Thanks again.
Boy that's an interesting perspective.....and I agree with it. I also congratulate you on your recovery.

I thought it might be cool to go through an entire season of shots and recoveries.....even the possibility/reality of a non-recovery. It wasn't met with the same attitude as your story.

Great buck. Great story.

Don't think thatsome here didn't learn from your experiances.
Many don't have the nads to post thier less than perfect performances. And yet sadly a few continue to show how some lessons are harder for them to learn than others.[]

I posted about one of the bucks I shot, it was actually the day before Greg shot his, I hit the deer in a simillar place and I was raked over the coals for not being able to take off the next to look for it, even before I ever took up a blood trail!! I gave to 2.5 hrs and found him about 130 yds from where I shot him. But I tell ya, man I had some support, but there were many ready to hang me and didn't even know my history or anything.

I remember that post you hit the buck then said you had to teach school in the morning and couldn't look for it.
You were ripped enough to rethink your plan and gorecover your deerif I recall.[:-]

Yeah bud I remember that, people said you shouldn't be hunting if you knew you had to work the next day. What the heck?? Who plans on a less than perfect shot? Stuff happens and you deal with it.

GM, I joined here right after I had shot but not recovered a buck. One of the first threads I read was one of yours and boy you were getting it hard for not recovering your animal ... Needless to say, I lurkedbut didn't tell my story So yeah, I learned.

Nice story Greg. It's a good lesson for all those who want to take off right after their deer. When in doubt, always wait! I usually prefer to track alone or with one other person. Another mistake I see a lot of people make is to trample down all of the evidence.I've seen it happen, a group shows up to help and pounds down any sign making tracking almost impossible.
Congrats again!

bawana, no I had planned to look that night, no one ripped me enough to change my mind, it was already made up to go,as I did look that night, and recovered it 2 hrs later, but I was not able to take off the next day b/c we had to give exams. Fortunately it was recovered very quickly and everybody that jumped on me disappeared all of a sudden. No, I could not take off work the next day, and no I do not go to the woods and plan on bad shots, and the shot wasn't that bad after all. But yes, I took some heat for it and I never understood that. Not too many of us can take off work the next day.
