Yep, hickory is really good for a beginning bowyer. It'll let you get by with a lot of mistakes. Yew, mulberry, oak (red is okay but white's better), ash, yellow locust, pecan, walnut and maple all make good bows.

Any of the above you listed would be ok for a self bow Arthur? The main wood I have is Red Oak, Ash, Elm, Maple, Pine. Whats the best of what I mentioned and why? Thanks Art!!

I'd rank your wood from top to bottom, ash, maple, elm, red oak... and scratch pine off the list. Pine can make a bow, but it has to be so long, flat and wide to keepfrom over stressing the wood andbreaking that it just isn't really practical.

Oh gosh! I heard someone say backing for the bow....I think I have one with a snake skin backing laying around here....The bow is sentimental because the water snake thats on the bow bit me....long story....

That's just flat out cool, making your own bow and then killing critters with it, mucho satisfaction I reckon? Thanks for sharing..beautiful bow.. Love the bear rug too!
