Patented in 1968 by Hollis Allen. Then Jennings jumped on the idea and started producing compounds in violation of the patent. Story is that Allen was killed in a car wreck while driving to the court hearing on the suit he filed to protect his patent. Jennings was pretty unpopular for a long time over that.
After he refined his new bow, H W Allen filed patent application number 3,486,495 on 23rd June 1966 for an "Archery bow with draw-force multiplying attachments" and the compound bow was born.

Don't believe everything you read in a wiki. He filed in '66 but didn't receive the full patent until '69. If ya wanna be technical about it. [8D]But '68 is the usually accepted date for the introduction of compounds.

Actually, there was a doctor who invented a compound in the 30's, but decidedit would never be accepted, so henever applied for a patent.
