Story is that Allen was killed in a car wreck while driving to the court hearing on the suit he filed to protect his patent. Jennings was pretty unpopular for a long time over that.

He filed in '66 but didn't receive the full patent until '69. If ya wanna be technical about it. [8D]But '68 is the usually accepted date for the introduction of compounds.
Actually, there was a doctor who invented a compound in the 30's, but decidedit would never be accepted, so henever applied for a patent.
