Does anyone try to shoot long distances just for fun. I do. I try to see how far out I can get and still hit my target. I did some shooting at about 80 yards one day. I hit a 2 liter bottle, 2 hits with 2 tries. I find that my close-up groups get much tighter after shooting long range. Just like a rifle your technique has to be much better when shooting long distances. What is the longest shot you have taken just for fun?

40 yards, but it was normal practice, I shoot beyond the range I will shoot a deer at for the very reason you are shooting at 80, to tighten them small groups.

Would I shoot at 80? Yea as long as I had some youngster willing to retrieve my arrows!

I have a friend with a 3d course and we shoot out to 60 yrds a lot. I usually shoot a 3 shot group between 2"-6" at that range . I've tried it at 85 yrds using my 60 yrd pin on my old set up and hit a 3-d target everytime but they were from one end to the other !!LOL
It's fun to try though!!

I hear you Taz. I had my sister's two boys chasing mine for me. They would do that all day. There isn't much to do out in the country sometimes. That was an exciting day for them. I took advantage of that.

After hearing so many people say that longer range practice helped shorter range grouping I finally tried it this past year. I shot at 40 yds. Pretty neat, I could hold to hitting a 6" circle every time after a short while. I can shoot to just over a hundred yds in my back yard but I don't think I'll be launching any further than my 40 yd mark.

I can only practice out to 55 to 60 yrds.
But will agree that the longer practice distances do tighten up the close groups

I bought an adjustable yardage sight just prior to hunting season. I would have kept my old one on, but the new one came with a pendulum -- perfect for tree-stands. Anyway, I was sighting it in and was very pleased with it. Dead on accurate! 20yds., 30yds., 35yds., 40yds. What the hell, let's try 70yds.! I never found my arrow. I plan on figuring out how to make it work though. I'll probably try again!

I shoot long range fairly often. Out to the 60 yd butt at our club and out to 150 yds or so when roving. Amazing how well you can close in a target at 150 yds once you get the range down, especially when you consider you're releasing the arrow on something of a 45 degree angle. One of my best long range shots was a 50 yd heart shot on a groundhog. (Despite several more attempts at other varmits, I haven't been able to repeat that though.) It's alot of fun to watch a wood arrow sail through the sky like that.

I don't really see why shooting long should make you learn to shoot tight. If you pick a small enough spot, you should have the same result. If you shoot at the same size spot, it is finer at long range, and would be proportionaly tighter, but then if that was the case you would loose the advantage at sort range again. I'm lost...

Certainly practicing long shots makes short shots seem easy, which takes the pressure off, and it also makes on more aware of factors like wind. I don't know if any of you ever have one get away from you, but if you do, shooting long range range puts the pressure on that kind of thng too.
