RE: What fixed blade broadheads have the BIGGEST cutting diameter?
Nobody currently makes a 1.5" fixed blade broadhead (except Magnus Snuffers in the 185 grain version) Even with a 1.5" cutting diameter a 1.5" three blade head cutsthe same ammount oftissue as the original slick trick magnum and Muzzy MX4 so you don't gain anything. IfI were looking for the maximum amount of damage from a fixed blade then the only choice I see is the Grizztrick which will be available mid summer. It has more cutting ability than any other fixed blade head I can find other than the treeshark pictured above. But in order to get more cutting ability, even from the treesharkyou would need to use bleeder blades for a total cut of3-1/8". I think you are just kidding a bit but thehead in your pic is probablynothing more than a large scale modelbroadhead. That thing would weigh 1000 grains alone. Ithink the reason why you don't see a broadhead like you are looking for is because there is simply no need for it to exist. Seriously, how big of a holedoes a person needto put through a 200 - 300 pound animal to kill it in 10 seconds? The instant a 1" diameter broadhead goes through both lungs of an animal the blood pressure instantly drops tonear zeroin thebodydue to it being pumped out of the new vents you just created and the brain no longer receives oxygen and the animal passes out. It will take essentially the same amount of time for the animal to pass out from oxygen depravation with a 1" hole or a 3" hole. |

RE: What fixed blade broadheads have the BIGGEST cutting diameter?
Sure, the animal dies the same way, but won't you get a better blood trail with a bigger cutting diameter? Bigger hole, more blood will come out of it, takes longer to clot...right? Given the same shot on the same animal the results would be virtually the same the only real differance would be the shape of the hole. Another way to look at is a square that occupies 2 square inches in area is the same size as a triangle that occupies 2 square inches in area is the same size as a rectangle that occupies 2 square inches in area. Now assumeall threepenetrate 12 inches of deer they will cut exactly the same amount of tissue on their way through. For an example my BH's I shoot are bigger in diameter but shorter in length then the 3 blade Wensel Woodsman. They probably have the same cutting surface but my snuffers will leave a bigger hole because there bigger in diameter. There's no dought my blood trails shrunk in half when I went to a 3 blade snuffer, its much wider then what I was using and the trails ended much quicker. It's not the cutting surfacein regards to the length of the blades but rather the cutting diameter divided in half multiplied by the number of blades. This is the total cutting ability of a broadhead as it passes through an aniamal. |

RE: What fixed blade broadheads have the BIGGEST cutting diameter?
That wide cutting diameter is a PLANING NIGHTMARE!!! There was some discussion on AT regarding the Striker Magnum, and it was said that they may not fly well out past 25-30yds, by the guy promoting them himself. I believe due to the angle of those blades, if you hit a shoulder blade, your day is over, because that 45 degree angle is not going to be friendly for penetration. As was said, the Magnus 185 ( http://www.freddiebearsports.com/pro...3740&cat=D ) may be the way to go it you really think you need something that big, but I'll stick with my mechanicals for WIDE cuts, because I hunt where it can be pretty windy at times, and I don't need any extra planing on my arrows, I'm a bad enough archer as it is. For my Fixed Blade heads, I like my "Eastman Titanium Sabre 100's" and they fly real close to my FP's out to 40yds, so why change what ain't broke??? I like a less acute angle for my BH, as it seems to lend it self a bit better to penetration, and in essence, you actually have more blade slicing and dicing with a longer blade anyhow.
Here that 185gr Snuffer..... ![]() |

RE: What fixed blade broadheads have the BIGGEST cutting diameter?
I personally think penitration with a good broadhead is more important than the size of the entry hole. I'd rather have a good entry AND exit hole than just a huge entry hole.
This is why I use Razorcaps. They have a good cutting diameter of 1 1/8 inches AND 6 inches of cutting surface, have EXCELLENT penitration and are nearly indistructable. I hunt with 3 100 grain razorcaps and 3 150 grain razorcaps in my quiver. If I'm in a tight spot with shots out to 25 yards or less (which is most of the time) I'll be shooting my 150 grain razorcaps. Both shoot the same out of my bow with just a slight drop (1/2 inch or so) at 25 yards. I killed 5 deer this year with the same broadhead and it's ready for next season. All were pass throughs to include one shot through a buck's spine. Blood trails rainged from trackable (skin covered exit hole by front shoulder) to blood everywhere. It's a great broadhead with weight options from 100 to 200 grains. ![]() |
