RE: New spin on 3D...possible new format?
Anyone up for some "speed" golf?
Essentially this is the same thing.....and while you don't hear of many playing on the Professional "Speed" Golf Tour, you still have people who do it. Sounds like an interesting concept though. Who knows, you might find some people who would enjoy it. |
RE: New spin on 3D...possible new format?
Rick James I really love that idea!!! I think I could possible get the shop I work at to donate the use of their course or the other archery club I belong to. The club may actually charge us a small fee. Both locations are located right in the center of PA just outside of State College. A good central location for all to come, and there are lots of state parks to camp nearby and tons of hotels. I think this is something we should explore further. I would be willing to try to help organize this for this summer. So what does everyone think?

RE: New spin on 3D...possible new format?
Anything to speed up 3D, but the ex state organization officer in me has some questions:
1) Does this limit the number of participants? Removes any concept of shooting group, so you send em out 1 at a time, so how much "lead" does a guy get before the next guy starts, you wouldn't want someone to be "caught" because that slows it all down. 2) Liability insurance. Basically you are encouraging people to run with a quiver full of arrows. Across rocky/rough terrain, up/down hill. If someone gets hurt, you are very open to a lawsuit. Many clubs have IBO funded insurance and I doubt it would cover this. 3) How do you combine score/speed? Say out of 300 I shoot 250 and do the course in 20 minutes. You shoot 245 and do the course in 15 minutes. Who wins? I love the out of the box thinking, other "shoots" I've seen/read about that sounded familiar where one where you don't have ANY shooting stakes, you rig a 5-10 target course, and the shooters have to follow a line (or rope or something that makes em follow a specific path). You can shoot each target whenever you want with two rules: 1) You can never go backwards, so if you pass an open shooting lane, to bad. 2) Once you get to a certain point, you can't shoot. This is where you would go in and get your arrow. Another one is multiple stakes per target. Shoot from whatever one you want, can be different on each target, however, further back you go, the 10/8 ring are worth more points, but missing or shooting a 5, costs your more points. As you get closer the prize for the "10/8" ring shot goes down, but the price for missing/5 isn't as great either. Ultimate risk/reward. BTW, no max distances: you have a big target, toss the first stake out there at 80-100 yards, and no range finders. --Bob |

If you do groups, make them all shoot the target before anyone moves to the next. They start as a group and finish as a group.
So, make a "no running" rule. You can hustle without running. Main focus on the score and then add a point penalty based on the best time. First to finish, no penalty. Each subsequent finisher gets a one point penalty for every XX seconds behind the best time. Finally winner is all point based (as the times are converted to points). Just some thoughts. |

I don't like it but thats just me. To me shooting at a 3-D shoot is allot like bow hunting, you need to take your time in drawing your bow etc! Bow hunting isn't a race, why should 3-D? And for the folks who take forever shooting these shoots, leave your range finders at home and learn your yardages with out them. People rely on to many things these days, some of you would be so lost if you forgot one of your gadgets at home!

See I beg to differ Schultzy. I think getting your heart rate up simulates buck fever and the shaking your body does and could help in training you to control and concentrate on your shot, and adding a time element into it make you make quick decisions, just like when hunting and animal does something unexpected and you have to quickly judge yardage or shoot quickly before that animal passes out of range or through your shooting lane.

RJ,
Yeah, I knew your camp isn't that far (it's in Bradford, right?) My sister teaches in Canton (getting up towards you there). You're definitely not too far. If I can get my bow fixed and tuned up a little bit (I'm still needing new strings, and would like a new release, I definitely would be interested in doing an indoor shoot even though I would make a foold of myself:D PAHardwoods, I would be up for a group 3D HNI shoot for sure. Just name the place and time (preferably sometime in the summer). Bob, Rules are definitely a big consideration as is liability. I know when I was more active in our offroading club, we had to sign individual waivers to clear the Club from responsibility, but I'm not sure what legal components there are to make those waivers hold in court (fran, where are you?;)). Scoring would follow a format mentioned by gundeck. You have "time to beat" set by the leader, and you simply deduct an X amount of points for each second/minute past that time from the overal shot score. You wouldn't necessarily have to run, but walk briskly, and hike some (the more hilly/rocky the terrain, the better:D). There could even be a handicap to encourage the older members to participate :D...just kidding, I know plenty of "older" guys that would keep up with many of the young guys just fine. Schultzy, Good points. Really that's why I doubt it would ever take off. Most people see competitive archery as a test of mental concentration mixed with physical development (which in a sense, it is). This would just be a different version...more extreme if you will;) |
RE: New spin on 3D...possible new format?
ORIGINAL: atlasman I don't know anything about the pace of major organized 3D events but I can't friggin stand going to a "fun" shoot (spring thaw, fund raisers) and getting stuck behind some idiot with a garage full of gadgets hanging off his body glassing every target and taking FOREVER to shoot. Reminds me of the pinheads plumb bobbing a 70 foot putt on Sat at a public course with a 2 foursome backup on the tee box. There is a time and place for everything...........some guys take things (includingthemselves) WAY to seriously. A "quick" paced 3D event would be cool. Matt, I think a "timed" 3D shoot would be a neat thing, and a good thing, I have a local course that I can shoot almost anyday of the week, which is nice, because I rarely make it out for a SUNDAY morning shoot, due to either work or church. I wish there were more Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon shoots. |
RE: New spin on 3D...possible new format?
New spin on 3D. :)
http://www.motoshot.com/ ![]() Put a couple of 'trees' in front of the target's radius and you'll have a real challenge. Problem with 3D shoots taking too long..... Hi-tech guys take too long looking at the target. Trad guys take too long looking for thier arrows. (bwahaahahaa) ;);) |
