RE: To Add to Atlas Thread/Direction for your state
ORIGINAL: Germ What do YOU think is the right direction for your state as a whole. Remember not just the area you hunt. Here is my number 1 1 manage the state in 4 different zones atleast UP, NLP, CLP, SLP I would like to see more, but that is a start. As long as the insurance and AG people Cry the loudest, we will have a hard time getting anything we want, even though we pay the bills. So I give up, We are moving back to Kansas this year,Where the Buffalo roam, and the Deer and the Antelope play! The son in law seen 6 bucks the other day, I wont tell you how big they were. :D |

Wisconsin
I would like to see at least one season (next?) that will not have earn-a-buck implemented..... I like to see deer when I go out hunting, and, assuming I recall this correctly, a 25 deer per square mile population, will mean if you have 40 acres you should have about 1.5 deer on your property.... |
RE: To Add to Atlas Thread/Direction for your state
I believe Illinois should start making it a lot more difficult for outfitters to operate in such mass quantities. This will help in-state hunters, and better management of the deer herd. As far as the state as whole, split it up into a northern region and a southern region and create regulations accordingly. Anyone from Southern Illinois knows that once you get north of I-70 it's a whole different state.

Mich - One buck tag or Earn a Tag.DNR would have to get out and get soild herd numbers in eachCOUNTY and set its tag numbers to the herd numbers. In 5 years we should see results then adjust tag numbers as needed to keep on track. Will Mich(state gov)ever do anything right for our deer herd. NO!![:@]

ORIGINAL: huntingson ORIGINAL: nodog Phone check in. This state requires you check it in whole and in the county or adjacent. What a pain. I don't even know where they are away form home. Getting out of the woods late and trying to find a place is stupid and a huge waste of time and money these days. I honestly feel like Ohio does a pretty good job managing its herd. Especially with the new antlerless bonus tags for archery season. I do not like the extra gun season weekend though, but at least it is post rut. Punish the lawless. Va. has a phone in and it is beautiful. Poachers do get busted. You punch your license when you get one so that if you get stoppedthere's proof your not some poacher and you have a day to phone it in when you get back to where yourstaying, comfortable and warm. They can even be quartered on the spot and taken out easy as you please. |

RE: To Add to Atlas Thread/Direction for your state
ORIGINAL: nodog I agree Ohio does a good job, but disagree with your comments on call in. First off it only hurts the law abiding. The lawless won’t check them in anyways. Secondly they maybe listed but how often do you think to check and even if you do, can you find them after dark in a strange place? I hunted a new place recently and as I sat there the thought came to me, crap I forgot to see where I can check one in if I get one (I didn't bring the regs with me). The thought of coming back the next day just to check the thing in was at that time the only answer. I was 80 miles from home. That's the problem and as it was I got turned around and ended up going the wrong direction for about 20 miles. It was blowing a gale, cold and raining, pitch black out. I was relieved some what that I didn't get one. Phone in I wouldn't have cared. Punish the lawless. Va. has a phone in and it is beautiful. Poachers do get busted. They can even be quartered on the spot and taken out easy as you please. Side note: they actually check on things. I shot my buck last year on my parent's farm and used a land owner tag. The DNR called and questioned my mom about it because they were trying to catch me having used that landowner tag for a deer I shot on my grandparents' farm which is next door. Seemed a bit nit-picky to me, but I wasn't against it. I was also impressed that the DNR knew I was related to the owners of both places. |
