Default Broadheads for Elk Hunting

What are the best broadheads someone can buy for maximum penetration on a elk. I want someone that penetrate their mass and reach the vitals. Something that flys true and well out of a compound bow.
Thanks for your help everyone

The technical answer to your question is basically simple. Most would agree that all things being equal, a two blade will penetrate better than a three blade, and a three blade will penetrate better than a four blade etc. So if penetration is a concern I would recomend a quality two blade head. There are a number of good ones. In no particular order; Bear, G5's B52, Magnus, and Zwicky to name a few.

I like a three blade for psychological purposes. Theoretically at least, on a three blade one blade will be cutting against the grain of the muscle and therefore the wound should be harder to plug up, yielding a better blood trail. All of that is debatable. Nevertheless I have had good results on elk with the following heads, again in no particular order; G5's Montec, Muzzy, Rocky Mountain Titanium. I have never used a Steel Force on an elk but have good friends that have and they have performed very impressively.

Of course there are others that will perform well too. These are just some I have personal experience with.

An article that i had read states that he shot a elk in the shoulder, which is supposed to be the thickest of bones and muscle, and still penetrated enough to reach the vitals. However he stated that he did not think chisel tip broadheads probably would not have gone through all that. I own muzzy broadheads so i have nothing against them. Just if i make a slight movement in my arm and hit the shoulder blade i want to penetrate threw. What is your reaction between that?

Good Post Antler Eater, IAWhitetail, he's right.

I had only one experience with broadheads on elk. I have gone on only one hunt and with success I know how my Muzzy 3 blade 100 gr did. I shot my bull at 33 yards and had a complete pass through. The arrow proceeded another 10 yards or so past the animal and layed intact. A change of blades and I shot a buck that fall as well with the same broadhead.

I've used Muzzy for over 10 plus years and they've worked as well as any could have under all circumstances. I feel they are at the top if not the top and you won't go wrong with them but they are not the only broadhead on the market that is just as deadly. Several others I would recommend and use myself are the Rocky Mountain Titaniums, The Wasp SST Hammer 3 blade fixed, InnerLoc's and Thunderheads although I don't like how Thunderheads assemble.

Good Question IA. You will get as many answers on here as people, but I personally like the 125 thunderheads. I have some friend that like the expandables but I suggest that you cheque the regulations on what type of broadheads are legal in the state that your going to be hunting. Good luck, Bobby

If you're shooting a modern bow at 60lbs plus, penetration won't be a problem. As long as you're using a quality broadhead, which some were mentioned by Antler Eater. We've used many broadheads over the years to take elk from two blade solid construction to three blade fixed both in 100grn & 125grn, never have shot four blades but am sure they'll do the job. As far as shoulder blades go I would'nt recommend that shot with any head to much can go wrong. If an elk is somewhat broadside you would want to aim for the crease just behind front shoulder about 10inches up from his belly so a shot near the shoulder blade should'nt come into play. If you miss the crease and hit above front leg you'll still get plenty of penetration and still be well under shoulder blade and it's a deadly shot. In the area we hunt there's quite a few camps with about 30 total hunters off and on, I know most use either thunderheads or muzzy's in both 100 or 125grn, our camp all use muzzy 125grn and have no intention of changing. We shoot ics beman 400's and are confident out to 40yds. Like I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. hope this helps. elknut1.

Their are alot of things that contribute to penetration, the broadhead being just one of them. I suggest you tune your bow properly, and follow antler eater's advice. I know all of the heads he listed will get the job done if you do your part.

IA, All the boys gave good advice I personally have taken elk with Wasp SST 90 grains. Then used the same head on a deer later that year. From my experience elk huntin though I can tell DO NOT flirt with that shoulder blade practice shooting and hit him in the sweet spot. Elk are big strong animals if you don't double lung him they can go along way. My friend ran elk through from his shoulder throught his guts and into his inner thigh, he only took one lung though and it took us close to 24 hours to recover that elk. Even if you do get lucky and punch through the shoulder blade you would need a lot of KE to go deep enough to get the far side lung.

5 elk in the last 6 years and all have fallen to the Muzzy 90gr. or 100 gr. 4-blade. I like to experiment as much as the next guy but I always end up with these on the end of my arrow.
