Snort wheeze
i just watched a hunting video and they all used the snort wheeze. i was wandering has anyone tried and has anyone had any luck with it.

RE: Snort wheeze
that and grunt calls are the best
|
RE: Snort wheeze
It's no match for the buck fart coming out in 08. That thing is amazing.
|
RE: Snort wheeze
Ive been using it a fair amount the last two seasons with pretty good luck. Its just like any other call, when used at the right time to the right deer it will work. Mainly its used during the rut when bucks testosterone levels are high. When you snort wheeze at a buck its pretty much saying "IM GONNA WHIP YOUR A**" Deer are just like people some might come over and say go ahead and try it, and others may avoid the situation either because they are smart and can find hot does other places or they are scared.

RE: Snort wheeze
I've hunted deer for exactly 50 years. I've killed over 80 deer with a bow and I have no idea how many with a gun. I have NEVER heard the snort wheeze in the woods. I have seen it on a video from an animal once. I really don't think it's something I'd worry about. I'd rather be very quiet and hunt the wind.

RE: Snort wheeze
A snort wheeze directed at a younger buck willscare the bejesus out of him! It's actually quite commical! I messed with a young 8 a week or two ago. I snorted wheezed at him once and he jumped off about 30 yards. After the second one, he couldn't stand it any longer and he high tailed it out of there. He thought he was getting ready to get whipped. Snort wheeze for a larger buck I've had some limited success...in combo with the grunts it works well.

RE: Snort wheeze
i have really good luck with it i do it alot inthe pre rut and rut .....

RE: Snort wheeze
And what do you call really good luck? I mean, really... give us some numbers and percentages of deer seen, killed, called etc. I see so many people come up with this crap and they've killed a total of a handful of deer or only hunted a couple years and they want to tell everyone "this is gospel". Give us some facts.... like I've shot 84 deer with a bow and never heard it once.
And childers, forgive me for being skeptical... but you're 16 or 17 years old. And how many times have you really heard it. I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I sure do think a couple weekends of huntingdoesn't really tell us a lot about snort wheeze experience. Oh heck, I'll call 'em like I see 'em... "Bull Hockey". I think there is so much "disinformation" being spread around the internet by people that just want to hear themselves talk. |
RE: Snort wheeze
Im with David , Im not saying calling dont work in the right place at the right time but,I prefer to just be quiet
|
RE: Snort wheeze
well then you need a hearing aid .. i have deer in a pen and they do it all the time///and also cough to sounds use like a human too....i kill my buck this year using it and called ina 120 class last year didn't get him... but i pa a 120 class is really good and i got a 110 this year only hunted 5 days this year and called in 4 bucks with it and a grunt call and horns too .. in combination with snort wheeze

RE: Snort wheeze
And if you look at other post from this guy you'll see he's asking how he can get a hang on stand up in a tree. I'm sorry, but I think this post and thread is totally bogus. Review his other post and this one is a no brainer. Are you related to him? Are you his alter ego or his brother? Show us some pictures. Penned pets don't count. They're not natural.

RE: Snort wheeze
i forgot they are super-natural ,,,,well i have heard it in the wild too alot more then i thought i would

RE: Snort wheeze
I have never tried the snort weeze. In 20 years I had my first buck do this here in Michigan. I had a 7 pt. under me and he was doing the snort weeze on a little 4 pt. 40 yards acrossed a water hole. It was really cool. My hat fell out of my treestand and landed next to the buck and he never moved. While he was doing the snort weeze. Both bucks were small so I let them roll.....

RE: Snort wheeze
what are you trying to say? |
RE: Snort wheeze
I used it on a little 6 point, I figured he would run away. He came running in snorting and grunting, all his hair sticking up, it was awsome.:D
|
RE: Snort wheeze
I heard it for the first time in 12 years this year. Quite a few times actually. I dont know if that is because I hunted alot more than i did in the past, or some strange environmental change. But it seemed that all year deer up here in NE ohio were way more vocal and responsive to calls than they have ever been. I dont have a snort wheeze, but after hearing it and watching em do it, I kinda want to give it a try.
I really am curious as to why all the sudden the deer on my little slice of heaven all the sudden started to speak up....... |
RE: Snort wheeze
When I say I haven't heard it in 50 years perhaps I should qualify that. There was a stretch of years when I owned my own business and hunted a LOT that I averaged 50-60 days a year in the woods. I have more days in the woods than some of these people have lived and I don't hear these critters making all these exotic calls they want us to believe are every day talk all year long etc etc. It doesn't happen all that much, and certainly not all year long.
|
RE: Snort wheeze
I dont doubt you at all david. In fact I would have to say I totally believe you. I had never heard more than a single grunt from a deer. and I spend a bunch of time in the woods. Probably not nearly as much as yourself, but more than 25 hours a week. unless its a bad week. I just dont understand why all the sudden the deer around here have become so damn talkative. i heard probably 5 or six snort/wheezes this year. And lots of rolling grunts, bleats, single grunts etc.
the one sound that I still don't buy is that "buck roar" never heard anything like it come out of a buck. I would be inclined to guess that all this is a result of some change in thier environment that I have not noticed yet. |
RE: Snort wheeze
I have called in alot of bucks mature and immature alike to the snort wheeze.........I have also had mature and immature bucks turn tail and run when I have used this call........it really just depends on the mood of the buck. Here is a video clip from last year of a 1 1/2 that I snort wheezed in and a mature 4.5 later in the morning that was chasing a hot doe, he actually snort wheezed as he was chasing her after i grunted at him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeQJVe-fzcE BTW rib me all you want for hitting the tree..............it was below my line of sight and never saw it,had a clear "veiw" to the vitals..............oh well, he's still alive and only getting bigger as the years go by.;) |
RE: Snort wheeze
Well you all just go ahead with all your noise making. I'll be patiently sitting quietly in my tree on the down wind side of a trail waiting for the deer I've patterned to pass by. He won't be alert, alarmed or know I'm there. It works for more often than some old cigar smoking cough.
|
RE: Snort wheeze
Well to each his/her own, you can hunt anyway you like, I was merely showing proof that this call does work........I only use it during the rut and then only if the buck is out of range and not coming towards me, all other times of the season I sit quietly and wait for the deer to come to me...........but regardless it is how I choose to hunt, why bash someone for hunting the way they want?????
|
RE: Snort wheeze
ORIGINAL: davidmil what are you trying to say? |
RE: Snort wheeze
I'm right there with you davidmil. Been hunting a few less years than you have. Killed my first deer with a recurve bow in the mid 1960's and quit counting a long time ago. Inall these years I've never heard the famed snort wheeze. I have noticed a correlation between the amount of hunting videos a hunter watches and how often he hears the snort wheeze in the field though.
I find it interesting that nobody even talked about it not that many years ago. |
RE: Snort wheeze
Here's the million dollar question: why do you care one way or the other? You don't use calling as a hunting tool, some of us do and have success with it, you choose not to do it and that is fine, but why make fun of or bash someone that does call to deer...........if you have never heard a buck or doe snort wheeze then maybe you hav'nt be in the woods at the right time, most calling is most pronounced during the rut, but if you hunt in an area with a skewed buck/doe ratio or your rut is really drawn out you probably have never heard deer vocalizations...........next you'll be telling everyone that rattling is bogus too and no bucks fight in the real woods:eek:
BTW I have video footage of bucks sparring too if you need proof. |
RE: Snort wheeze
I'm with Davidmil, a lot of posts in this thread are BS. I've been hunting for 41 years and have heard the snort-wheeze 2 or 3 times. One of the times I caused it by grunting at a very big buck (170s), however, a doe came out and sucked him away from me.
Although I haven't ran out and bought this call, I may eventually. I believe that it may be effective during a short period during the season but now is not the time. They're all fought out and ready to drop their antlers (in my area anyway). There will still be some breeding taking place, a few fawns, but there won't be any fighting over them. By now they all know who is king of the hill. I've witnessed this over the last 8 years. |
RE: Snort wheeze
I've never used it, local pro shop owner told me he had pretty good luck with it this year. He called in a few deer using it.
Like most calls, do it at the right time with the right deer and he's going to come. I think it would be worth trying. I don't call alot but have noticed that when I call it doesn't scare the deer away. They either come or they don't pay any attention at all. The only call I've had scare them was the "Can". Haven't had much luck with that one. |

Obviously now is not the time to be using this call in the midwest, but if you are in a southern state such as La. where the rut is just cranking up it could be a very useful call. BTW I'm sure you know it GregH , but no amount of calling is gonna pull a buck away from a hot doe.;) Also you don't need to buy this call it can be done very easily with your natural voice. |
RE: Snort wheeze
Believe it or not I can do a snortwheeze with my buck growl. It works, I was amazed.
|
RE: Snort wheeze
ORIGINAL: lungbuster12point06 I don't think anyone was saying they are using the call now? I have only ever used it during the chase phase of the rut when bucks are cruising heavily and are on no set pattern. Obviously now is not the time to be using this call in the midwest, but if you are in a southern state such as La. where the rut is just cranking up it could be a very useful call. RE: Snort wheeze
imnot trying to start drama or anything like that. im just saying since i do a lot of spot and stalk and only ground hunt i get busted a lot. and when i get busted they always use a snort/wheeze atleast once
|
RE: Snort wheeze
LOL, not the same "call" or maybe I'm wrong. What your hearing is a warning call alerting other deer to a potential danger, that's why they do it before the take off.. The snort wheeze, which I've never heard in 30 years of hunting is a "hey you want to get your butt kicked call."
|
RE: Snort wheeze
ORIGINAL: childers imnot trying to start drama or anything like that. im just saying since i do a lot of spot and stalk and only ground hunt i get busted a lot. and when i get busted they always use a snort/wheeze atleast once On the other hand all these posts where people come on and say "I have been hunting 75 yrs and never heard or seen that" are horse crap. I know a lot of guys who have been hunting a lot of years and cant find their azz with both hands. I have killed bucks off the snort wheeze and heard it. I don't know how many times, I'm not a numbers guy I like results. Obviously it works and is more successful in good buck to doe ratio areas and only during certain times of the season. Watch the deer and they will tell you when it is time for it. |
RE: Snort wheeze
I have never heard a short wheeze other than on TV. And I hunt a lot. I have no doubt that they make that sound, though, just not that often. I rarely even hear a deer grunt and when I do they are very close and usually you can barely hear it.
One thing I did hear this year that was different was a doe grunting. The first time was when a fawn came in below my stand and I could hear a deer several yards away and I could see it was a doe. Then I heard a lot of grunting and was sure there was a buck grunting at the doe. The doe came in and I just sat waiting for the buck which never showed up. Two other times I saw that fawn and doe and each time the doe would grunt every few seconds. Sadly for the doe, the last time I saw her, I put an arrow through her and she grunts no more. |

RE: Snort wheeze
Add my name to Davidmils list. After 42 yrs of bowhunting, I've grunted in a bunch of busks but not a wheeze.
|
RE: Snort wheeze
I've seen it work and fail on TV, the times it has worked it is allmost alway's after normal grunting.
So to answer the question even though I'm full of horse crap. It may be effective for a very short peroid of time,in area's with a good buck to doe ratio, is it worth the investment hey who knows it could bring you in the buck of a life time,or it could be a waste of money. The big question is, Is there a scent lok insert for it so the deer don't smell your breath if they come in down wind? |
