Been hunting them with a rifle since I was 16. Last year was the first with a bow and I'll never give it up. Had a 6x6 follow me down the mountain opening day just after dark. If only he had stepped out 10 minutes earlier during shooting light. Never heard anything like it before and I am thouroughly hooked on bows and bulls.

That's great, I hadn't heard to many people talk about elk here in the bowhunting section. I have been hunting here in Idaho for the past 12 years, since I was 12. The most adrenaline I have ever felt has been an Elk at a couple steps ripping out a knee trembling bugle. That has happened on a few occasions. Keeps me coming back every year.
Hope to hear a couple more of your experiences. It doesn't get much more exciting than being a few feet from a bull (or a cow) and trying to get a clean shot off with your bow.

I hunted cow only hunt on the indian reservation last fall. Had a 7x bull within 25 yards bugling his head off and several 6x6 bulls chasing around me but too chicken to challenge the big boy. I have stuck a few nice elk but that was the most fun I've had in the woods.

BowElkDwn, welcome to the forums.

I don't necessarily hunt elk with a bow because I live in PA where we don't have a standardized elk season however I have hunted elk with my bow. I took a 6X5 bull in the Big Horn Mts. of Sheridan, WYO. You can see a pic of me with my bull and read the exciting story at www.asatcamo.com under ASAT believers.

Rob, there's a lot less gray on that chin than in your recent photos! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I go to Colorado every year for the last few in hopes of a nice Elk. The beginning of the week always brings close calls, but I end up looking for a muley come the end of the weekk. I just might not buy a muley tag this year and just go for the Elk though.

Arctic, if the hair was on the chin, the grey would be there <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>.

BowElkDwn, I've hunted in New Mexico (1999) unit 15B in the Gila passed on some small bulls and ended up coming home with nothing. My friend however came home with his first P&Y! We were into bulls the entire time right up until the daylight ran out on our last night. We saw some big bulls 350+ class. Then in 2000 we did a hunt on our own in Wyoming off of Togwotea pass near Tripod peak. Came out of there with two bull elk and one bull moose. The one bull scored 334 P&Y all in twelve days. Then this past year in 2002 we hunted in your state of Idaho outside of Clarkia off of Pinchot Butte. Six days of hard hunting saw a few bears about six different bulls and came out with one on our fifth day, my buddy took him. All bowhunts. NOTHING BETTER THAN A CRISP MORNING WITH THE BIG BOYS LETTING LOOSE IN THE TIMBER!!! Where do you hunt in Idaho?
