Default Scent Lock clothing

I've bow hunted for years and have never worn scent-blocking clothing. Everytime I get close to buying I think about Fred Bear who was extremely successfull without using any of this junk. Any thoughts if this stuff really works? Is it necessary to dish out money for base layer and outer layer? Which brands work best. Thanks.
