RE: Man-Cave / in the ideas
Great pics John.
My house is to small with 2 boys, wife, 2 dogs and a cat, lol But my garage is so big I am kicking around the idea of putting a room in it. Anyone ever done this? |
RE: Man-Cave / in the ideas
I did a side job for an oldbuddy.....
I furred the walls with Z furring and foam insulation, and covered it with 1/2"drywall. I put a nice knotty pine paneling from the floor up to3'. For chair rail I used 1X3" ruff cut lumber. I also used the 1X3" ruff cut lumber for the baseboard. I stood the drywall up rather than laying it down. At each rolled edge after the drywall was finished I put another piece of ruff cut lumber (1x6") over top the taper edge from the chair rail up to the acoustic ceilings wall molding. Don't forget to add blocking if you use hat channel or z furring to fur the wall so you have a place to attach your mounts and misc other things. The wood is much easier to work with for hanging decorations. It is a shame to put a 1/2" hole in the drywall to use a toggle to hang a mount. |

I'm working on mine right now also. I guess we all have the same winter-time projects.
I found a really nice looking wallpaper at Menard's that looks like wood. It's cheap (as in inexpensive) and it looks great. Maybe you could use that on the lower half/third of your walls? Put a nice piece of chair-rail on top and paint the upper part of the wall. Or just use 2 different colors of paint and a 6"-9" wallpaper boarder dividing the 2, with a piece of chair-rail on top of that. For my cieling I'm going to do a beam-and-panel cieling. I have an 8' cieling also, so I'm using 1/4" oak plywood (cheaper and thin) and 1x4's. It'll only hang down about 4" total from the cieling, is easy to install and relatively cheap, considering the look you'll get. But you have to take some time to lay it out right; you'll want any lights/fans/ other fixtures to center in the pockets right, or it may look a little off. Here's an idea for inexpensive wainscott; and all the trim is just 1x4's with thicker plynth-blocks under the casing to finish everything off. No miters! ![]() Here's one of the wallpaper I mentioned. Menard's looks alittle better (I'm re doing this). ![]() |

Jeff:
I'm not sure if it would have a place in your room, but I'm thoroughly impressed with the log siding that I used in my cabin. If you have a place for it it's so easy to work with and reasonably priced. I paid .40 a foot for this stuff througha local logger that has his own mill, I know he had 6" wide stuff available as well. I ended up having to butt up a lot of the sections for the back wall because I had a lot of cutoff end pieces and was WAY over budget on this already........Iwould have done this differently if it weren't simply a hunting cabin, but other than this I love the stuff and the way it turned out. Maybe this would be a good option for the wall section you were planning to put your mounts on? Here is the interior of my cabin that is pretty much done as of a few weeks ago (finally!!). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
