I think more than one buck uses a rub and others scent mark/rub the same trees. I think you saw a little guy do it but it doesn't mean it was all done by him. He just left his calling card for the rest of the crew. Sorta like a fire hydrant for everybody....
Without question. But in this case, it was the spike that did it..

Funny you should mention that Don. My dad was telling me of a friend of his who had just witnessed the same thing. That got me thinking that the tree may have already been rubbed and the little guy was just spreading scent on it. Guess not.
