Default are kill shots really necessary?

I've heard people say, yes it's good to watch the deer's reaction
after he's shot. just curious as to what it is you want to watch?

I don't really care about seein a deer kickin, jerkin, crawlin,
and laboring to draw his last few breaths. <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'm not too sure exactly what you're asking. To me, it's very important to watch how a deer reacts to the shot, especially if you don't see the thit for some reason.

A deer that's shot through the heart will generally react differently that one shot through the liver, lungs, gut, etc.

It's an important tool to help determine the next course of action to take.

I believe bogobble is in reference to hunting shows. I for one agree with you BG, I do like to see the impact of the arrow hitting the deer and the first few frames such as the deers reaction to the shot, but I don't like to see the deer actually dying. It's kinda tasteless in my opinion, especially on television where everyone has access to it. I don't mine seeing a deer I shoot go down within sight range, mainly because that makes me feel good that I made a good shot. But there's no place for that on TV. Just my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I think it's a good tool for beginners and novices to see what happens. The long drawn out deaths are in poor taste. I don't have a problem with the couple jumps, stop, look around, FLOP ones. I agree that the ones where the deer struggles to get back up and falls etc are not needed on TV. Some shows purposely eliminate the hit and death scenes on TV(Buckmasters for one). I really don't thing it matter one way or the other though. They are shows for and watched by the hunting community. It's an education.

bogobble I am in a way like you, I do feel it is important as GVDocHoliday says to see the initial few seconds after the shot, but in some cases thay do tend to drag out the last moments a bit to long on some shows. That last bawl bothers me when I hear it and I have killed a lot of deer, I prefer the quick down and out hits, but that is not always the case even with the best of hits.

I agree that the drawn-out ones are less than ideal for tv.

I've taken a large number of deer by different means. I must be missing something because 70-80% have died within sight, most 0 to 70 yards from point of the hit, and not a one went out &quot;kicking and screaming&quot;. I have watched them intently; while it is a solemn feeling, I want to know they are done. Quickly.

I want to see the deer go down, or how the deer reacts after the shot. It gives me a sense on the impact of the bullet or arrow, and what kind of hit, because during the shot, everything is so quick, and I just see where I thought I hit it rather than where I know I hit it. And there's just something about arrowing one and watching him crash, just a rush for me.

I agree with Nick. Newbies who see the cleaned-up version on TV don't know what they are in for. It's a serious thing to take a life, animal or human. I think making everything nice and pretty trivializes the animal's life. It took a while for me to get the guts to pull the trigger on one because of the seriousness I feel in taking a life. I believe in knowing what you're in for and a deer in the death throes might turn a newbie off forever if he's not prepared for it. I applaud Ted Nugent for showing the field dressing of the deer on occasion. Life ain't sanitary and clean-you gotta get your hands dirty if your going to be a successful hunter. All I'm saying is let the hunter beware before he enters the woods. It isn't pretty to see it on TV, and perhaps a non-TV video would be a better place to introduce the rough stuff, but I believe you should see it before you're faced with it in person.

Personally, sometimes it bothers me to watch it, sometimes it doesnt. The only drawback I see is that it definitely fuels the anti's fire.
