Today found me perched atop my favorite stand on the farm I've aquired to hunt this year. After tracking and successfully finding a doe for my buddy last night, I was pumped. Between that and seeing the monster a few days prior, I was ready to hunt. I got settled into my stand about 4:00. The weather was just about right, it just "felt" like hunting weather. I set contently on my fencerow, waiting, watching, and hoping.
About 5:00 things come alive. I look up to see a doe comming out of the woodline. Then another, and another. 3 does out in the field 200yds away. I'm glassing across the field, hoping something else comes out. Then I hear something behind me. I slowly turn around to see 2 does comming right at my stand. Being a day late they had to get a pass. Doe days ended yesterday. Go figure. They feed around for a while, keeping me on my toes. I get carried away watching them, and forget about the field in front of me. I look up to see the 3 does, turn into 7 deer. 4 bucks!
I slowly raise my binoculars up, checking the new additions to the field. One spike, a little forkhorn, a small 80" 8pt and a good shooter 100" 8pt. The four of them were flat out dogging the does hard, but the does didn't want any part of it. I turned over the can a few times, followed by my True Talker, I got the forkhorn to come my way. He hangs up about 50yds out, I hit the can once followed by a few short grunts. I starts trying to get a whiff of the wind. I once again had some scent out and I guess he caught it, so he headed my way again. Got to where he realized there were does around me and started after them.
The daylight started to fade and the deer started to make their way back into the woods. I waited until after dark and made my way back to the vehicles. Just thinking, another great day in the woods. I yet again failed at filling my first archery buck tag, but it was still a very productive afternoon.
However, last night I found out I might not be able to hunt the property anymore after rifle season begins. I'm pretty bummed out about that, but I've gotta go talk to the landowner my self and express that I'll just be archery hunting.
This will be my last opportunity to hunt this piece of land until next week. I'm heading out tommorow afternoon to Oak Ridge for a Blackpowder draw hunt with the family and friends.
There's another story for you guys to enjoy
