What happend!?(UPDATED!)
Ok this was a so so weekend, saw several deer this weekend but it wasnt the greatest weekend. Started off when I got the news Friday when I got to the Ranch and heard that my cousins son hit a great 140+ class buck, double lunged it. But it crossed the river and went onto to leased land, leased by our towns pro shop owner and we couldnt get in to find it. Thats two that we have lost because of him. Satuday morning, I went out, windy as heck, but the deer were moving, drew on a great 7 pointer, good quartering away shot, and shot just under him, my fault. Lastnight I had a good buck come in after I growled and he came running up the logging road we cut a couple years ago, he freshened up his scrape, I was hoping hed step out into the field, no, he makes a turn and starts walking west. I get him stopped in between 2 trees, keep in mind they are about 5 feet apart leaving me a good pocket, I draw, set the pin and release. I was sure I hit him, it was right at that light transition phase where you can see deer good yet its dark. He took off like I never hit him. It sounded strange after the shot, almost like my arrow struck something hard...like a tree...I checked out the two trees and there are no noticible marks from my phantom broadheads hitting one of them. The deer tuck his tail and he didnt kick, he just ran. I get down to see if I can find the arrow, no sign of it. I looked for any blood, none to befound, found alot of Urine on leaves but that was it. Im thinking I hit something other than him. But what? My cousin is going out this morningto look everything over and see if he can atleast find the arrow. Im thinking it was a good clean miss but not 100% sure. What are your thoughts on what may havehappend. Ohh hewas 25-30 yards broadside.I knowif he can find the arrow, thearrow will tell the tale, and I never heard the buck crash.

RE: What happend!?
If your friends son double lunged the deer, it is surely a dead deer and not far away especially after crossing a river.
On yours, to tell you the truth, I probably couldn't have left the area without some answers and some type of plan which includedmyself. The loud hard hitting sound that you heard sure could have been a shoulder blade or heavy bone.

Wll my wife just contacted me, says he found my arrow, theres no blood nor hair on the arrow. They combed the woods and found no sign of a wounded deer. arrow is in good shooting condition. That takes a load off my mind. Will try again tonight.

Is it against the law to track deer onto this guy's land? Only reason I ask is.....you say the first buck was "double lunged". How close to this guy's land (that he knows he can't go onto) is he hunting for a "double lunged" deer to make it over there?

In WI you cannot follow a wounded deer onto posted land to recover it even when the landowner denys permision? In IA, if the landownerdoes not want to cooperate with the recovery, you call the DNR and they are generally willing to ****** you on the recovery op, you have the legal right to recover it. to me its worth a wasted animal.

They found my arrrow in the woods right about where the deer was standing that I shot at, I hit a small invisible limb.

The river along our property makes a sharp bend and adn the deeer ran no more than 75 yards total before it reached the leased land. In wi you cna not enter someones land without permision from the owner or the leasee. Youd have to know the leasee. Hes got a big head cause mammas the mayor and he owns the pro shop in town. I have not heard word yet if they had found anything on the other side of the river yet. But im happyI did not wound that buck lastnight.

In NY you cannot enter another person's land without permission even to track a deer. You can contact DEC and they will try to intercede, but if the owner says no, that is the end of it.
