Man, I can't believe we have so many baby-killers out there. That's just what the anti's want you to do, kill Bambi and ride him around and show him off. You talk about ammunition for the tree-huggers, man, give me a break. Even if a kid had never killed a deer, I would discourage him from shooting a fawn. If he did kill one, I would praise him 'til the cows come home, but there are unthinking people out there who's snide remarks could hurt that kid and turn them against hunting. I've seen it happen. If you've got to shoot a lot of does, wait until later in the season to give the little guys a chance for survival. Is this sport all about killing? Not for me. Is killing a part of it? Sure. I can bet you you'll be more satisfied shooting an adult deer than a fawn. I'll sleep well after letting the little guys walk, how 'bout you?

I have let alot of deer walk,mature as well as little ones.If I WANT to shoot a little one,I will and I am not living my life according what the ignorant anti's want from me,if I did,I wouldn't hunt at all.


This was my daughters 3rd deer and she was just as proud of it as anyone would be of their deer.It was even a button head.I choose not to shoot the bb's and in the future,if we can tell,she won't shoot them anymore.Hard to tell at 140 yards.


I ate some of it the other night and it was delicious.

I will not shoot a fawn, they just wonder around in the woods without a clue looking for something to do an something to eat.

Around my area a Good sized Fawn (6 months old) will dress out at 80 lbs - sometimes more.

I've shot several when I was younger - and a couple times when filling permits - shot a fawn over a Doe on purpose.

I've got absolutely no problem shooting a fawn if its legal,and is in the best interest of managing the herd. Its been a couple years since I took a fawn - but I will again if I need to take a doe for our managment program, and only a fawn doe presents itself.

I will say the meat is different on a 6 month old deer. It definitely requires no aging, its usually very very lean - and you need to cook it rare (like most deer meat) to appreciate it.

I too will drop a doe fawn whenever I feel like it. Why? Because I can and they're great laying next to a couple of eggs in the morning!

ive gotten to put a few people on there first deer ever and twice they ended up being button bucks, i couldnt be happier if i shot a massive buck. but last year the one buttong buck my friend shot (1st shot ever , and with a bow) he smoked it at 25yrds and when we found it he was not as happy because of what other hunters would say about it being a button buck.

So much for wise use of a God given resource. Logging is a major industry here. What would happen if loggers cut 5 year old pines instead of 20? They'd be out of business in short order. Are we that greedy, is it all about me? Is it all about carving another notch in your bow? Forgive me SRH but I don't get my kicks out of shooting babies.

No. 1.....a fawn in most states is a legal deer. If it's a legal target....what's your beef?

No. 2....I'm taxed with herd reduction, this year. The best way for me to go about this....(and to also maintain the goal of a "more" balanced herd)...is to kill every female deer I see. If I pass on ANY female deer.....the food she consumes between the point at which I "pass" on her....and when I take her....is food not available to another deer, at a later time in the season.

When I look at my woods in late November....and notice the browse line is ZERO to 6' up.....I know I have a problem. That's why I contacted the wildlife bio and asked for his guidance.

So....the ethics police and the misplaced morals are just that. "Misplaced". There's a reason I won't pass up a doe fawn, this year. There's a reason I may pass on a really small one. I figure that one stands a lesser chance of making it, anyways.

MY woods have basically three predators. Coyotes....cars....and ME. I have unlimited doe tags.....a family of FOURTEEN that I donate venison to.....and the resources to provide. I'm shooting.

You've got it exactly right, to each his own. The "babies" are very tasty and if your area has a lot of them then have at it!.
For those that don't shoot "babies", let me ask you , Do you eat veal? Suckling pig? Spring lamb? All "babies"
