GregH, would you purposely take a spine or a one lung shot if the deer was not alerted?

Whether the deer is alert to my presence or not has nothing to do with me nottaking that shot again. There are other variables that are more important to me for not taking that shot.

1) A spine shot is not pretty, it requires a follow up shot. Doesn't seem humane.

2) One lung shots can be iffy and sometimes require extensive trailing. There's a good chance that the deer wont be recovered. Again not very humane to me.

PS. If that was a trick question....... good try.

ORIGINAL: Mr. Longbeard

I've killed 4 deer with head shots... 2 does and 2 bucks... Haven't lost one yet... The deer I have lost were from shoulder shots... How many of you have shot deer in the shoulder???

Or maybe I should start another post asking how many deer have you lost over the course of your bowhunting???

I've killed over 100 deer with a bow... Prob 95% being does... Out of the bucks I've killedall were spikes,3pts and 4pts... I've only killed 1 8pt on public land that I got mounted and it wasn't that big prob 2.5 year old with a 11" spread... I've been hunting for 30 something years and when a decent buck showed up I took a shot that I felt comfortable with... The shot was close and the deer didn't have a clue I was there and My bow is super quiet...

A few people on hear said that they would do it with a rifle and not one person said a word... You dont think idiots can wound a deer with head shots with a rifle...

I'm sure there are a few people on this forum who are so called "ethical" hunters... And I'm sure that a lot of people that came on hear and roasted me are hipocrits... Roast me for shooting a deer in the head with a bow and call me a slob hunter... I wonder how many of these so called "ethical" hunters have broken some kind of game law or shot over there bag limitWere not going to hear anytrhing about that are we... I'll bet that out of all the people that roasted me only 1 or 2 have walked the walk

I will hunt the way I want... You hunt the way you want...

As far as the coment about killing big deer on public land in Md... I know there are area's in Md with better deer than I hunt... But like I said I hunt Western Md... Green Ridge State Forest to be exsact... Your not going to come on hear and tell me you've killed any big bucks inside GRSF with a bow... If you did you got lucky!!! How come your aviator deer isn't one of your public land monsters

Dude I've argued with your type before...I only believe about 1% of what you say... You would say anything to discredit what I say...

I'll say it again... Good luck to all you green field, corn field, perminant stand, box blind,"hunters"You guys wouldn't make a pimple on my !@#...
I think the most important question to ask here is why the hell you made this post? You asked how many would take a head shot, no one said they would and it made you so angry that you started blasting everyone for giving their opinion which you asked for in the first place. Best to stick to your headshot hunting because you're apparently much better at that than accepting other's opinions (and spelling and correct grammar for that matter)

It's better to ignore this guy. His justification is wher he hunts. I hunted public land in the Pleasantville Mt are of PA from the time I was 12 yrs old wih a rifle and 15 with a bow. That area is no better than Western Md. I passed on deer much bigger than the one in my avatar due to bad angles or the deer as spooked though. That's part of hunting and I don't regret it 1 bit.

Sorry I got in on this so late . Acouple years ago Isaw a goose on the news in the park running aroundwith an arrow through "the head". I wonder Buck fever ????????? My Dad spined a doe with a bow in Utah about 30 yrs ago , I don't think he's hunted with a bow since . It wasn't a bad shot it just went that way . As for me the head is a smalltarget .Be sides it ruins the trophy .

A taxedermist friend of mine got a whitetail head in for a mount a couple years agoduring gun season. The buck had a arrow stuck through the top of his snout. The broad head was sticking just through the roof of his mouth Some unethical bow hunter took a head shot at this poor buck. Can you emagine the suffering this deer went through untill the gun hunter put him out of his misery? With all hunting under fire we can not aford to have this kind of publicity. There is only one ethical place to aim on big game animals weather it be gun or bow, and that is in the heart and lung area!!!!
