I've seen all of the HCA penetration test videos. And if you are trying to bag some plywood to redo the interior of your trailer...then you'll have better penetration with the ultra lights.
I used to (heck it wasn't that long ago) subscribe to the mo speed is mo better for mo penetration... but I really do not think that this is the case. The whole arrow diameter thing is pretty moot when it comes to deer...because liquids, fats and oils are little more than lubricants. It is pertinant, however, in the greater scheme of things. Because over my years of baseball (catcher and batter) I have been hit with plenty of pitches going faster than 70 mph (which is about what a change up, or slower breaking pitch clocks)...and I am here today...with nay a bruise. However, if you were to shoot me with an arrow at that speed....it would probably go right through me. Of course...the diameter of an arrow and the diameter of a baseball are quite different...weightwise as well, with a baseball weighing about 5 times that of an average hunting arrow.
I have yet to shoot a deer and not get a pass through. I've lost count of how many I have taken now...but I took 11 last year, which was about average...add that to Lord knows how many pigs...and I'd guess I've taken hie on 100 animals with a bow. Only arrow and one instance did I not make two holes. With the speeds we are shooting, I don't think it really matters that much whether we hit a deer with a 350 fps pixy stick, a 600 gr log, or a 70 mph sedan. I think we will all be having venison (or hash) for supper.
The issue with tests that have been done is that they are not being shot through a consistant media. However, the game we shoot is not a consistant media either. Therefore....no test will ever be good enough.
Really though, whether is a 250gr at 360 or a 600 at 180, the difference is really little more than how deep the arrow sticks in the dirt after a pass through. We would need to shoot very light arrows or extremely heavy arrows to start having deminishing returns to the point that we would not get pass throughs on deer sized game.

I can't get over how fast that sucker is!! I Don'twant to be the one to tell you.....but it doesn't say Bowtech on the limb....gasp! oh thehumanity.

So the similarities are of course there in performance. And most modern bows can take a dry fire....the IM just happened to take 1500 straight. This isn't a big deal...unless you plan on treating your bow like a red-headed stepchild.

Germ, did you type "naked guys with more chesthair than me" into the Google search engine again? [&:]
Collie - I think you're spot-on with your assessment there. I don't think I could've said it any better.
The advantage of a 300+ fps arrow isn't the knockdown power - it's the range. I'm slightlyleft-eye-dominant, and have monocular vision, which inhibits the ability to accurately judge yardages within +/- 5 yards. For me, a 330+ arrow gives me a little wiggle room to make a 5-7 yard over/under estimation, and still be in the boiler room. That's it. But for hunting purposes, that flattened trajectory could be the difference between me filling a tag, and me going home with a broken heart and a broken arrow.
It's not all that out of the ordinary for me to look at an object 30 yards out, and think it's 25-35. Maybe my vision is worse than normal, who knows?
We've all had bucks come dogging does through the stand set. You draw your bow, make a bleat, stop the buck, make a snap judgment guess on yardage, and turn it loose. If I guess 25 and it's 32, and I'm shooting 250 fps, that's a clean whiff or a bad hit. Same scenario with a 350+ fps arrow, and I'm close to or IN the vitals.
Believe me, if Easton game out with a new 5.5 gpi shaft, that had a lifetime warranty guaranteed to never break, and consumers' bows were warranted to handle that arrow - retailers wouldn't be able to keep them on the shelves. I know I'm not the only guy who wants to squeeze out as much speed as possible.
Also, for what it's worth, these arrows have an FOC that's through the moon.
Like I said before, if I use these arrows, and don't like 'em, I can just plug my old ones onto the string, and be getting allegiance speeds with 'em, which is not too shabby.
