I have a small problem. I live in Nevada, and this year I am planning on making a trip back to New York for deer season. I will be hunting on family land(a little over 100 acres). I want to bow hunt for the last week of the season and then pick up my rifle for the first week of that season. My problem is that I cannot get there ahead of time to do the leg work for a good bowhunt i.e. scouting, setting up a good tree stand, trimming lanes, etc.
Spot and stalk is an option, but I would have to get very lucky to get close enough. What should I do? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Give me permission to hunt opening week of the season. I'll go scout and set up a stand for you. I'll need airfare and lodging, topo maps, and sattelite imagery. JK, Roy. Find the topo maps and sat pics of the land, post them on here. We should be able to point out areas to give a good look. Also talk to your family members up there about where and when they are seeing deer.

if it is family land...have them do some scouting for you............your best bet may be if no other hunters come out there at all...to leave it that way...show up when you can...take one day to scout around (keep your scent to a minimum) find where you think i good spot would be and set up a tree stand....put some digital trail cams and check them daily (again keep human scent down to a minimum).........i find going into a new spot for the first time i usually see more deer then after a few visits...

Take at leasta day or two,to do some low impact scouting.At the time of year you are going to be there you need to find the doe's bedding and feeding area's.Get down wind of their run ways,look for concentrations of buck sign down wind of bedding and feeding area's and set up on it,that time of year bucks will be on the move all day.Find the doe's!
Honestly scout until you find an area worth setting up on.Your scouting time will be more important than your stand time.

My tip would be to do your scouting while you hunt. When you get there just set-up in a spot that looks good, who knows, you may guess the right spot and put a bruiser down on your first trip to the stand. If not, just adjust your set-ups after each hunt,sure, scouting and preperation are a big part in hunting, but IMO luck is more important. I have patterend deer and figured out exactly what they were doing, just to sit in stand and they never show up. I have also had set-ups that just looked plain crazy and stupid that were very effective. With limited time, your best bet is to just be out in the woods!
