As long as it's with a BOW, KP!!

RE: Shooting young bucks?
Depends on what you and everone else considered young. For me, young would be 3.5 years old. I would be very disappointed in myself if I took a buck this young.

RE: Shooting young bucks?
We have a self imposed 8 point or better for gun and 6 point or better for bow (don't do the scoring). Of course, after that I only see 6's when gun hunting and a fork when bowhunting. ;) Hopefully that will change this year do to my prior forebearance.

RE: Shooting young bucks?
If you don't shoot them....someone else will.
:D |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
In all honesty.....I was talking tomy sonlast night about a few of the bucks I saw, last year. There's at least5-6 (out of the 10-12 --what will be 2-1/2 yr olds) that might look pretty good, this year. I only know of ONE of them I "might" take. Then there's 2-3 (what will be 3-1/2 yr olds) that I "likely" WOULD take.
2 older than 3.5 (that I know of) that I WOULD take. So....(as far as BUCKS go).....I'm hunting about 3-5 deer. |

RE: Shooting young bucks?
I'm too tired to fight this onenow. A couple 16-17 year olds in the deer section have worn me out. :D
Just remember..... Let em go, so they can grow! You can't ea the horns. I'm a meat hunter. Just think how big he would have been next year. And of course the all time classic-"If I don't shoot him, someone else will" Have fun, play nice. |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
In PA 3.5 is pretty old for a buck, but with antler restrictions that is improving. Young is a matter of perspective, so what I am looking for is bucks 3.5 and older. For other states, or some exclusive spots here, that might be too young.
No matter what the age, you'd better be taking them with nothing but heart double lung shots. |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I'll get picky when my freezer is full ..... I always SAY that, and then I letmany walk ..... kicking myself after the season if the freezer isn't full ....
Where's my popcorn????? ![]() AHHHHHHHHHHH |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I think that it is a landowner/hunt club decision. If the group wants to trophy manage, then the hunters should respect that and abide by the rules.
If it is on your own property, it is completely up to you. If you want to shoot a spike or a fork horn...go ahead...its your property, so do as you wish. Me personally, a young buck is nothing more than a doe with potential. Cull bucks need to be shot, but otherwise if its a buck and its not going on the wall...let it go. There are plenty of does that need to be shot in the places I hunt and often not enough people to do the job. |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
i wouldn't unless i was tring to reduce the overall deer herd
|
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I shoot them with the milk still on their mouth. I wash my clothes in enfamil, just to bait them in.
|
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I don't have a 4 wheeler so I always shoot the small onesbecause they are easier to drag(or throw over my shoulder).

I don't have a 4 wheeler so I always shoot the small onesbecause they are easier to drag(or throw over my shoulder). While not widely known or discussed.....they actually have handles until they reach one and a half. Good catch, NEW! |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I will shoot whatever strikes my fancy at the time. Most of the time I'm looking for a mature deer but,I hunt for the pure enjoyment of hunting. If that means shooting a younger deer then so be it. I like to keep the herds inthe areas I huntas healthy as possible and for the most part they are but there are areasthat areover populated. It's in those areas that I try to take most of the does I shoot. I like big antlered bucks like everybody else but I enjoy hunting more.
We do this for enjoyment folks......try to keep the herds healthy and shoot what makes you happy. If only shooting big antlered mature deer is your cup of tea then go for it. If shooting younger deer makes you happy, again go for it. Follow your states hunting regulations and try to preserve this sport for the generations to come. Beyond that, shoot what makes you happy. |

RE: Shooting young bucks?
I think it would be interesting if everyone in the archery contest set a minimum on what to shoot, let say >120". Never going to happen but lets say we did. The amount of deer entered would probably go down initially but do you think it would gradually go up each year after if we kept the same standards and people involved?? I think it would
|
RE: Shooting young bucks?
You just want all the deer to yourself!
Another classic... |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
ive been feeding my deer heard minerals and supplements for a couple years and have seen a big improvment. ive taken some book deer that i let walk the year before, but ill also bust the first spike i see every chance i get. its up to the hunter and the buddies or land owner hes hunting with... dont let a bunch of guys off the internet slam you for shooting what you feel good about, hunt how you want and shoot what you want. if youre bow hunting, its a challenge to get clsoe enough for a shot, not only hitting it. besides, smaller deer are smaller targets.

120"---Could we enter three 40" deer?

RE: Shooting young bucks?
I don't shoot young bucks but don't criticize anyone who does? The sport is about the hunt not the trophy. If it makes you get the shakes(Buck Fever), it can't be wrong.
|
RE: Shooting young bucks?
I shoot first then I check their ID to see how old they are.
Tom |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
Its hypothetical, but for you GMMAT, will drop it down to >90 :) |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
Depends on your intentions and goals. Varies.
It alsodepends on headgear. I have never said, "Boy he is a dandy 140" deer but so young and a little body. I am going to let him get a little older and a bigger body." My goal is 140 orbetter. No matter the age or body. Just being honest. |
RE: Shooting young bucks?
wonderful point-- i was just re-reading this and it seems alot of us are thinking a 3 year old deer is fully mature. and who am i to say he isnt. but i do know that same deer on minerals and feed supplements will growalot in a given year and at 4 or 5yrs will have alot larger rack than he would have had with no supplements.
i have a 145 incher that was aged at 2.5 years want pics? |

RE: Shooting young bucks?
I think that would be great. At sign-up people post what class buck they arelooking for. We could see who sticks to self imposed guidelines. Of course the selection would vary due to State, land access, etc etc... NO BUCKEYE!!!!! I'm not saying change it!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOooooooooo!!!!:D;) |
