I was shooting on Tuesday and on my third arrow the arrow must have shattered on release. The tip of the arrow continued on. The tail shaft went into my left hand betweem mt thumb and index finger. Missed the bone but did nick the artery. Right now I have my hand in a temporary cast. Had surgey to fix the artery....the doctor pulled out three big pieces or arrow and she said thousands of small fibers. I will have some pictures to post up....it's hard enough to type with hand as it is.

Any body heard of anything like this happening before??

Yes, I have heard of it happening. That is why it is critical to inspect carbon arrows everytime before you start shooting. I have made it a part of my pre-practice ritual to inspect my arrows. Also if while shooting I hit something solid or hit one shaft with another I will check those arrows out very carefully to make sure they are in good shape and safe to shoot. Another thing to keep in mind is making sure the spine of your arrow is stiff enough for your bow.

You got me thinking about my arrows now. Sounds painful, hope things get better real soon for you.

To many have shattered for me, I am done with them. Has people had better luck with the spiral weave? Or else I am going with a alluminum, carbon composite. Till they come out with something better.
Why even take the risk?

That is why I check my arrows often. Hope you get better soon so you can shoot.

What is the heal time on something like that?

I have heard talk about it happening but, do not know anyone it had happened to. I use the alluminum arrows so I check them for bends and things like that anyhow. Good luck to your recovery!

I've heard of it and seen pictures but was never around when it happened. And I don't ever want to be. If an arrow has a crack or should be smashed and thrown away. If you hit one with the other, check them out carefully. Any time you miss the target or critter you should double check them. Look your arrows over carefully and maybe even apply a little twisting pressure to them to expose weak areas. There was a picture a couple years ago floating around on these boards where a carbon shatterred and slayed out into several pieces that all pierced the shooters hand like yours. I mean, it was ugly. He took the picture with it still stuck in his hand.

I had it happen with one of the old French made Bemans. Luckily I had a Gore-Tex jacket on that stopped me from getting anything worse than a bad bruise. I bought my first dozen a/c/c's the next day and haven't looked back. Hope you heal up soon.
