Also, when I was about 18 and played golf about 2 days a week I was a scratch golfer with an $80 set of clubs.
That's a whale of an accomplishment....and it has nothing to do with the set of clubs. I've actually never met a scratch golfer who could play that infrequently (and I have no idea of the course you were playing, either (although that 'should' have been weighted via the slope/course rating system in place by the USGA).

That's quite incredible. The scratch golfers I've known pretty much touch a club, EVERY day......and I've been associated with my share of them.

Kudos.
I had people asking me for lessons and people that played all the time that wanted my swing. There are a lot of scratch golfers that never make the pros.

Istoped playing for 10 yrs gained 40 lbs and sometimes shoot good half rounds.

As a med student I play golf as a way to get my name known with all of the local doctors that play. Being a good golfer has opened quite a few doors.

I have a hard time getting motivated when I practice nowadays. I hit shots that boggle my mind. I have too many "I used to be able to do this or that" thoughts in my head the last few years. Kind of drains your motivation. Not from lack of effort though. Time to pull the plug and move on. Look out deer!!
BINGO!
Exactly the problem. When you can't do what you used to it actually makes it harder to hit a good shot. When I stop thinking I stick great shots. When I start thinking I'm done. Like shooting a 42 on the front and then a 52 on the back and the back is easier. While I only played 2 days a week I practiced every day then. Used to hit my 9 iron at a telephone pole on campus in college. Now Ipractice right before I tee off.
