Bow Turkeys.....

In NC....it's illegal to take a hen during the Spring season.
My county has no Winter season.
I've never shot a turkey with a bow.....and I'm thinking I'd shoot a jake if presented with a shot. Would you shoot a jake with a bow (assuming it's legal.....and again NO WRONG ANSWER)? We have a GOOD population in my area.

My first turkey, which I took just a couple years ago, was a jake. So, yes I would shoot a jake.
No hens? With as many turkeys as you have that doesn't seem like good management practice. I am no wildlife biologist, but even here in Ohio you can take hens in the falland we don't have near the turkeys you seem to have. Weird. Dang Southerners. [8D]

If it was legal and it felt right, then yes I would probably shoot the jake. He would have to put on a show though for me to feel right about it. If he just walks in and stand there like jakes sometimes do, I would pass. If he came in strutting and gobbling and all the other stuff that makes your heart pound then he would likely have the air let out of him.

I contacted the wildlife biologist for my area and asked why we didn't have a Winter season in my county (The next county over, does). What we're up against, here, is........ourselves. The data they use to determine if the pops are able to sustain a Winter season....is (and I'm not kidding) .....harvest reports. So....if not too many birds are taken in my county.....it HURTS us as far as having a Winter season.
Logic? It seems we're not killing enough turkeys to be able to kill more tukeys.

. I'll gladly come and help increase your harvest numbers. As for shooting a jake, personally I haven't done it but if I get the chance with my recurve next weekend... you better believe I will!!!

I personally think anything taken with the bow is a trophy. I have taken jakes before. When it gets to the end of the season, i don't like to go home empty handed. They are just as hard to shoot with the bow as a tom.

Any Turkey taken with a bow is a trophy in its own right. Turkeys are so smart, and hard to hunt that it dosn't pay not to take any legalturkey that presents a shot. In my opinion, if turkeys could smell as well as they could hear and see, they'd be almost impossible to hunt. I shot my turkey with a bow last year, and was the best hunting expiriance ive had to date. Take a Jake, you won't be left unsatisfied!!...........KP
