The Growl/Roar is not just a Dominate buck thing, I have seen a 6pt make it. It is a Deer Vocalization! And Dominate Buck and Biggest Buck are not necessarily the same Buck!
Also, younger deer immitate the sounds they hear the big boys make. I heard a 2 1/2 8 pt. growl this year. I've also heard fawns trying to grunt.

I guess the deer are immitating all the hunters in the woods blowing calls.Thats why nobody heard the deer noises till the product came out.And instead of"speak the language" the box should say "teach them the language" I just had to have some fun with this one, sorry guys.

Germ, the soundI heard was exactly like the "growls/roars" between 4:40-5:05 of the video link you posted.
Here is my ?, I think the drury's got it wrong(IMO) The deer in the video and the one's you heard(shot) are not Dominant bucks. Is the deer making the noise to challenge for dominance? If so why did all those dinks come in on the video?
IMO the bucks come to the call for the same reason they respond to rattling. Some want to fight and some want to watch what is going on.

The bucks in the video definitely seem like dominant, or the most aggressvie bucks, in each frame. Whydo you think they are not dominant bucks. And as to the buck i shot, he weighed in at 200lbs on the hoof, scored 132" w/ a broken brow tine that would have put him at 137", he was aged at 4.5. he was also the biggest buck i had seen out of 16 i had seen in six days of hunting that week on the same farm. And he very well could have been the dominant buck, but i dont think you can tell that just from a pic.
For some reason I thought you said 2.5[&:] Ok , thx again good info.

On grunts/cans/rattles/etc....

I began deer hunting in '05. I bought a can....a rattle bag....a grunt tube. I hit the rattle bag one time last year.....and the grunt tube.....and 20 minutes later....I had the biggest deer in my woods come by me. Coincidence? I'd say yes. I don't think there's any way he could have heard me from where he was. I also saw a nice 6 pointer that same time frame. Nah.....just coincidence.

I've got a LARGE number of deer in my area.....but I see few MATURE bucks (3.5 or older). I tend to stay away from calls. I simply think I'm alerting the deer to my location. I have too many does for my bucks to consider scrapping for one that's taken. I even grunted when I thought my 12/9 buck was going to leave my set. I eventually harvested him......but I know the grunt had nothing to do with it. It was a last-ditch effort to turn him that didn't work. The doe in front of him turned him towrds me.

I've heard tending grunts; maternal grunts; fawns vocalizing and the death "bleat" (2x). I'll likely always carry a grunt tube......but I'll also likely use it less and less.

It isn't a growl, it isn't a roar, its the same tending grunt deer have always made. Its the same sound we've made with our regular grunt calls.
Exactly, walk by the growl/roar in the store and go right to the TrueTalker.IMO~best deer call on the market with The Can a close second.

He didn't have a throat patch.....and in the deer world maybe he's considered a "nerd". Good catch!

I dont know if I ever heard untill a couple years ago when I was rattling one in. I didnt know what the heck was comming in till I saw the buck, I though he was sick or choking on something or had been injured by a neighboring hunter. Upon cleaning him I found nothing to be wrong with him. Then last year Drurys come out with the call and I was able to identify the sound. I do have to say this much...the Buck Growl Works!!!!!!! Well it did for me Nov 3rd 2006.

Nice deer Wis Bow Huntr.

1) There are an awful lot of guys posting in this thread that they have heard the "growl/roar" vocalization...........and many are pointing out that they heard it before these calls ever came out. Too many for it to be considered coincidental IMO.

2) It is also clear from the experiences of hunters in this thread that this sound does NOT scare deer away............even young bucks.

3) Without question is the fact that many hunters have used this call and been successful in attracting deer of all sizes into bow range. So, at the very least it is a quality grunt tube and for $15 is priced fairly in the call market.........that is enough right there to give it a thumbs up. The fact that it offers an easily performed different vocalization that is having lots of positive feedback from hunters using it in the woods makes it an easy decision to at least try it........heck, I tried it just because I was bored and didn't want to come home empty handed from Gander Mountain

BUCK GROWL/ROAR MYTH?????
