Hunting in the snow

RE: Hunting in the snow
Hunt the food sources located nearest the bedding. Any standing corn or beans is awesome! Also, grasses that are still green and holding moisture under the snow. Fruit trees that still have fruit, Hickory nuts etc.

I'm in Kansas and we got the ice and snow also. I'm hitting the woods Saturday morning. I've heard people say that deer lay low when it gets cold likethisbut I don't think so. When I first started hunting, I noticed several does and a nice 10 pt buck walking along in the woods in about a foot of snow, just behind my parents house. A day or two later I followed the paths and found a food source and about 8 or 9 beds on the edge of the fileld that was near by. I learned a lot in those few hours. They move around like any other day unless maybe the wind is blowing allover but I heard that Friday it should calm down. If you can't tell already, I'm up for hunting in the snow.

Snow is great! You can see much farther into the woods with the white background. You can also get a good idea of whats been coming thru your area by checking how fresh the tracks are--hopefully you find tracks!

I can't wait. Kansas City is suppose to get about 12" tonight. We are covered in ice now. I plan to go out Friday afternoon and Sunday. As long as my climber will stick to the tree I should be okay, just COLD. I agree, much easier to spot'em with that snow. The biggest benefit - tracking that red blood!

Since it is so cold in your area, and they are warm blooded creatures, they will likely feel like they need to eat more to stay warm. The food is harder to find since much of it is covered, so, more time feeding is probably in order. I've found more day light hours of movement, but not necessaraly in the food plots or fields. Maybe acorns or green briar in the woods.
Also, if you have access to a large plot of land, you could perform my all time favorite - the stalk!
Hope you're up to a lot of walking - bring some supplies!
