I'm not much for sugar coating or political correctness.
u should give him tips on how to get that deer,
not critique him on his (wanting to find his first buck)
I didn't critique him on wanting to find his first buck. If he had known what to do BEFORE heading into the woods he may have that buck right now. Everyone wants to find their buck..........that is irrelavent. Having the brain and willpower to do the right thing in the woods is VERY relavent.

atlasman give him a break he gave the deer a half hour... thats alot longer than what most people probably give his/her deer that they shoot.. he made a killing shot annd was eager to get his first buck.. not everyone can be the perfect woodsman like you and abide by every unwritten law of deer hunting....
goodluck in finding your deer man.. if the yotes didnt find it first..

Atlas, I agree with you bud.
Had he known what to do prior to entering the woods and taking the shot, he wouldn't be in the situation he's in now.
To those of you saying "Well, he waited a half hour, what do you expect him to do?"
Yeah, we're all taught to wait at least a half hour. On a good hit.
If you see/hear the deer go down, thats when you wait a minimum of a half hour.
Otherwise, know your anatomy, replay the shot in your head, and give the deer plenty of time to expire. You need to know this before you even think of taking a shot at a live animal.

I have to say I do agree with you atlasman. You are a bit harsh, but correct. It is our responsability as hunters to do everything in our power to assure a quick clean kill, then follow it up with a recovered animal. With all the info on this web sight and others, no one should wonder what to do after the shot. I always wait if I don't see the animal go down. If after the wait I don't find the animal right away. I go home, don't get any sleep and go back the next day. We all have the chance of making a bad shot. We are only human. It is how you conduct yourself and your actions after that bad shot that separates true woodsman from someone who doesn't belong out there. At any rate I hope you do find your deer. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Maybe we should congratulate him for such a display of willpower?

I didn't realize that knowing not to chase a gut shot deer made you the perfect woodsman.............It's BASIC knowledge that anyone who didn't sleep through hunter ed classshould already know.

atlasman stop ****ing up my thread i knew i did that wrong when i did it but i thot i had a better shot at first so leave my damn thread if u have nothing to say

Atlasman, I agree with you in the fact that he should have waited, however he didnt. There is nothing we can do about it now. So why would you want to burn his thread? He might not have had the experience enough to realize what to do in the situation. But now that he has learned from his mistake, he is a better hunter for it.There is no need to go on with a flaming war, let just end it.

Childers,
One tip I can give you is what I did for a few years until I could control the urge to track to early. That is I would leave a back pack in the car with all I need to track field dress and drag a deer. What this does is gives you time to pack out your equipment like your tree stand (if your using one), but most importantly it gets you out of the woods. I know this doesn't work all the time but with questionable hits every min you let the deer lay the better. I do hope you find the deer and learn from your mistake just remember 99% of us here have made the same mistake you did. Good luck and I hope this tip works in the future.
