Default My dogs nose-way to good

Got a story for ya. since the weather was warm this evening i decided to drive the 4 wheeler to where i was going to hunt in a very remote area, so i put my yellow lab Boomer in the pole barn to keep him from following me. My spot is around 4 miles from the house and way back in the sticks. I hunt and see two does and a small buck behind me, then latter 45 min before dark i use the primos can and in several minutes a decent 1 1/2 year old 7 point comes right to the base of my tree. i let him walk away!!
when its quitting time im heading out of the woods toward the four wheeler. i get about 70 yards from it and am walking thru some weeds about waist high. suddenly i hear a racket in front of me and my light on my hat shines in the direction of the noise, i see a white flick of something, and the weeds parting, and its comming straight at me real quick. im thinking a dilerious buck or the yotes are hungry. im backpeddling real quick and hollering, the hair is standing up on my arms [X(]and all of the sudden its Boomer my yellow lab. He about made me crap myself.[] after getting him home and asking my wife when she let him out, she said it was at least two hours after i had left. How do they do that? anybody else had any experience's with the almighty k9 nose?

I had a dog that tracked me all the way to my treestand about 15 years ago. There I am in rubber boots, sprayed down withscent eliminator and the dog ends up tracking me with no problem, right to the base of the tree. In a way it worked out good because I've saved alot of cash by not buying odor elimination sprays since then.

Last Thursday morning I was hunting 20 ft up in a tree stand on the edge of a cut bean field.30 minutes into the stand I hear and see a doe 45 yards into the trees with no shotpossible. About 25 minutes later, I spot a beagle coming down the fence that is 60 yards in frontof me. When he got directly in front of me, he stopped, put his nose in the air and started coming my way. He came in within 20 yards of me, looked up and started wagging his tail. He did 4 circles and then started leaving the area. When he got to the edge of the trees, his nose went back up in the air and he took off into the trees. Minutes later, I heard the damn mutt barking. I am sure he was chasing away the deer. I waited for another 30 minutes to leave. After leaving the property, I drove down the road 1/2 mile behind the property. One mile east of the property I spot the damn beagle running back towards the property I was hunting. He sure ruined my hunt that morning. Come to find out it was the landowners dog that had decided the neighbors house was better.

Forgot to tell ya it was 25 degrees that morning and I was sprayed down with earth scent.

And I have heard that deer have a better sense of smell than a dog?

Yea i hunted behind my house a few years back. I was only about 200 yards in the woods and all of a sudden i hear leaves rustling behind me. I got my bow ready and slowly turn to my right to see my 2 golden retrievers coming right to me. The one was our duck dog and she has a remarkable nose. Needless to say they got away from my sister when they smelled my trail. I even sprayed before i left. They amaze me.

This topic brings back some memories. I had a huskey/shephard that did that to me. I was hunting behind my house in my favorite tree stand. About an hour before dark i hear something comming through the woods. I get ready and wait for the deer to step out...instead it was my dog. He came out and looked around...spotted me and came right to my stand. I yelled at him to go home and all he did was lay down under my stand and wag his tail at me. Oh well. Found out later that my mom had let him out so he could run around. She knew I was out hunting and never thought that he would come and find me. The next year she did the same thing...guess what...same results. After that one I told my folks "no more lettin the dog out when I am deer hunting."

Not while hunting but I once had my pointer track me down about a mile from the house in town! I had drove from my house in my cj7 jeep to the gas station. About 15 minutes later my dad let her out and away she went. I have no Idea what she could smell but she came right down the highway with her nose down and right to the door of the station. I spotted her about a block out and watched her come. It was amaizing. the only thing touching the ground was the tires. I suppose there was a vapor trail as it was not windy that day.
