How many times a year do you hunt without seeing any deer?
#11
Well , I marked rarely but I will count them right now.
Now ..you did say deer and not hogs.YOu also said from your stand and not walking out .
I saw one doe while in my stand and I hunted .....
7 times that would be 14 % of the time.
If ya count deer flushed out and hogs...I'm up to 42% ..I like that number better.

I put ....I see deer 90% of the time.
I went to check my journal.....and I've been skunked 5 out of 16 times afield, this year. On the surface.....you'd ask why I was off so much in my assessment. Here's the deal, though:
Hunted 16 times
Saw 91 deer
Had 55 within Bow Range
Harvested 2
I don't care who you are......I'll take that many sightings.....and I'm "OK" with my original assessment.

I think I actually rated mine a little high. I am from Rowan County in NC. I have 3 stands that I normally hunt. 2 of them are in areas where it is over hunted. At one location it seems like 25-50% of the time you will hear something in the morning before you are able to see, by the time the sun rises you will be lucky to see a few squirrels. The one stand that is not in an over hunted area it is still rare to see a deer but when you do, it is usually a nice deer. It is very easy to get discouraged in my neck of the woods. There have been seasons where the only deer I have seen have been what I have harvested, which like I said before are nice deer...not younger deer. That particular year I only took 3 deer, 2 really nice buck and one nice doe. I still continued to hunt after getting the bucks as we try to do our part in managment hunting. Our rule is that if we harvest a buck we should do our best to equal it out and harvest a doe as well.
I have not yet had a season in bow hunting, but the stories my husband and relatives bring back it is not much better during bow season. I guess I will find out next year.

I love the feedback, I do tend to see more deer in December. The property that Ihunt tends to be somewhat of a yarding area in the winter and can be really hit or miss early in the season. This is a frustrating time of year and I look forward to seeing more deer!!

Sorry. I tried to post my journal and it didn't print like I thought it would.
Yep.....55 within bow range.....and I'm ALWAYS looking for new places to hunt....lol.
In all honesty.....30 of those were in one sitting.....at one time.....and that's the day I shot my 7 pointer.

At my old spot, I saw deer 98% of the time. Unfortunately, that land was posted this year and I didn't know about it until opening weekend. So I decided to try some public land. I love it on the public land......but I just can't seem to pattern these deer. I don't know if they are really smart or really dumb, but I have yet to see them do the same thing twice. I've actually only seen like 5 or so this year. At my old spot, I saw 5 within the first hour of hunting usually.

Well this year makes 8 times. Every year prior I would rarely sit in stand without seeing deer. I think it's because of all the gas well being installed around here.

haha...its horrible, I actually put "rarely"--because I actually thought about it, and in the 9years I've hunted (only 2 with a bow), I bet I would only need 3 hands to count the deer I've seen on. BUT, nonetheless; I still have a great time, and when I do get lucky enough to see a deer; oh man! It is exciting!
I will say this, though...late season bow hunting last year I was able to get out over Christmas break at college for 5 days, and I seen deer 3 out of 5 days (didn't shoot anything though)!
