Yes, ethics is a subjective thing. Whats no objective is the much higher odds that an attempted head shot or spine shot will result in a bad hit more often than a shot at the lungs. We owe it to the deer to release that arrow with the best possible chance for a quick clean kill.

Agreed. Albeit to some measure, I do not frown upon those who feel comfortable taking a shot they know they can make. I believe in taking the best shot to give me an easy kill, and I'm only comfortable with a shot placed to the chest cavity.

My father in-law can make a head shot if he wants to, and feels well about doing so. That leaves me in no position to chastise his descision. Let people hunt how they want to hunt, as long as it's within the realm of the law. "Unwritten Laws" go out the window as soon as someone with a different code of ethical standards comes by.

I shot a nice doe in the jawwith a 1oz slug and it was NOT pretty. I am just grateful I got another one into her before she could run off. I have enough trouble putting one thru the lungs in a real world situation so I need the biggest target I can find. I am not sure why you would want to hit one in the head? Anything I have ever hit in the lungs did not go far and left a fine frothy trail. A head shot is for a rookie or someone who has forgot the value of agood clean respectable kill.>>>>>>>>>>>W hack!!!

I have a good feeling and a smile on my face after reading this whole thread. So many of you have good hunting ethics. I had the biggest buck of my life 10 yards from my tree, streight on, my only shot was a head shot. I let him pass.

I really didn't want to get into this thread, but somebody mentioned about a spine shot. I have seen a spine shot twice and both did not result in a quick death, only paralysis. Both deer had to be put down with a second shot. The first time was my fault, the deer was going broadside and when I went to pull the trigger the deer dropped down and hit the spine. The second time was a buddy tried a neck shot and hit far back and split the spine. Both deer dropped on the spot, but laid there balling and crying until being finished off. Here's what I think, if you think that taking the head shot/spine shot is the best shot you have, more power to you. I will wait on the heart/lung shot and if not presented, I won't take the shot. Killer Primate, great post. You were using the animals that God gave us to help survive. I applaud you on that great decision as I am sure most people would also.
