Default Another Question on Kinetic Energy

Is there an accepted range as to an appropriate KE? I calulated mine at 66.65 ft-lbs.

You're fine..........mine is in the 50's and my arrows bury 6 inches in the ground after passing through.

What about for bigger game such as elk or mule deer?

65 or more will be suffice for bigger game... and use a fixed blade cut on contact...

I had read somewhere and I believe it was Bowhunter magazine that 40 ftlbs is the minumum recommended for whitetail size animals and 50 ftlbs for elk sized animals. At that time, 55 ftlbs was recommended for mechanicals. At 66, your in great shape.

IMO a sharp broadhead and a well placed shot will take any game at the legal min for KE out of a bow. I think to many people get hung up on KE and speed. As long as your at legal limits and are a conditioned shooter it we be fine.

Any setup adequate for a whitetail is adequate for a black bear. Bears have thinner hides than do whitetails although a black bears hair is much thicker. It's all relavent to shot placement.
