Default new to the game

About a month ago my father and I picked up a couple of used bows, a reflex bighorn and a pse nova. We figured that these would be good enough to try out the sport, ive been shotgunnin since i was 5 or 6 but i never picked up a bow til then. we started shootin, and everyone was suprised how well we were shootin for a couple of guys that dont know anything, and it started to become pretty enjoyable.
the pse had to long of a draw length on it for me so we picked up a reflex highlander, and i really like it(compared to the pse). i was shooting about 4 in groups at 20yds. with it. But i really want to get out into the woods this fall, my fathers boss is going to take my dad out huntin and show him a few things, but we dont really know to much about deer hunting, or if I will even attempt a deer for a while, but i do know i want to try to shoot a turkey this spring.
So im just pretty well wondering if I got a good set up goin, do you need experience shooting from a treestand, and what are some good shooting tips, one thing i would really like to do is to try to take a turkey this fall, and if i do get a deer in my comfort zone where i feel i can make a good ethicle shot should i take it??

That's what it is about, a deer in your comfort zone. No one can tell you what to do when your in the woods, one on one with a whitetail and weapon in hand. All we can do is hope each one of us uses our best judgement and does what's in our ability and not beyond. Keep practicing to be the best you can be, remember, you know your limitations, your equipment and your ethics. Enjoy the woods, the seasons and if I missed the opportunity, the forums.

Welcome to the wonderful world of archery!

I would suggest getting those bows to a GOOD proshop and have them checked out. You don't want the old strings/cables breaking while you're in the middle of shooting. It's important to have theequipment that fits YOU properly. Make sure your arrows are matched to YOUR draw weight and draw length!

Good luck!

Dude, yer gonna love the Highlander!! Awesome piece of equipment! The list is long, but I'll try to keep it brief.

1. Don't overshoot. Too many people, especially when starting out, want to shoot 500 thousand arrows a day. Simply not a good idea. When you start to get tired, stop. This breeds bad habits that are hard to break.

2. Yes, you need to shoot from an elevated position. It's simply different. The angle will mess you up, but remember this: Start level, like you are shooting at the wall, and bend your waist to get on target. If you lower your bow arm, you will shoot high everytime.

3. A deer has a pretty large kill shot. If you can hit a 6" circle everytime, you'll kill a deer. Now that's not to say you shouldn't strive for a small group, but you're 4" is plenty good to take a deer. A turkey is much, much, much harder to hit and kill. The vitals on a turkey are about the size of a golf ball. Just set your range limit, and don't exceed it. Yes, shoot a deer this fall if given that shot inside of your comfort zone.

4. HAVE FUN!! Period.

We could be here all bloody night, but that's it in a nutshell......a very small nutshell.

Oh man.....you just opened the door wide!! LOL.....Many, many good sights out right now. Among the best are the Cobra Sidewinder, and my sight of choice, Vital Bow Gear. Expensive, but well worth it.

60 is plenty. Use a good sharp broadhead, and you'll blow right through him.
