A successful hunt and kill is not just bucks.

In my area, there is a very large Alpha doe that I will pass up a shot at a buck for.

Understand that moth my doe and I are tied to the trees to keep us from tumbling downhill. It was very steep. And my doe went nearly 60 yards uphill before dropping.

I don't have a photo but a pretty interesting story. I was able to get a leftover tag for a mulie doe for a friends land. Now these deer are wild and free ranging in the mountains just west of Denver but not exactly "wild". However there are way way too many. Anyway, I took a mature doe and while processing her myself I began cutting the round steak section of her hind leg it seemed really deformed. After I cut the meat off and looked at her bone it had obviously been shot and pretty much shatterd. It had healed up really well considering the wound. It basically it came up from her hock and at the wound made a large loop (3/4 hole) with a big knot at the impact spot and then pretty much normal above that. She showed no signs of limping or any indication of her injury at all while walking around. I even recoverd a piece of bullet jacket embeded in her leg. It just goes to show you how tough these animals really are. I hate to think of how long she had to suffer with a wound like this. I'm really surprised she even made w/o bleeding to death or coyotes getting her.

I do not know what your physical size is to compare the doe's size with, and the shadows impede full view of the doe, but that looks like one big doe.

If she is as big as she appears to be, I would pass on a nice buck to tag one like her.

PS: You got the hardcore veteran bowhunter look. I have a feeling we both cut our bowhunting teeth on a "stick n string."

Hey c903 I can understand ya thoughts on the alpha doe deal.I spent most of my season last year tryen to bag a big alpha doe that had the most beautiful red(like a fox) coat.Never did get a "good" chance for a shot on her.I have yet to see her this year but am hopen she made it through gun season last year and is just a lil wiser this one.i've asked the guys at the local check in if anyones brought a doe in like her and so far all no.......So hopefully she's still stalken about the public land just waiten for me to come back and continue the game.........

If god didn't want us to eat animals....Why did he make them outa meat?

I read somewhere( maybe here?) that the old idea of taking the alpha doe may not be the best idea. Now I'm not being judgemental at all, I just like to see what everyone else thinks.

The reasons...
1. The alpha doe or Matriarch is an older deer with very good survival skills. Chance of death by winter kill or predators is significantly reduced as she's probably "been there done that" and survived.
2. It takes more nutritionally(sp) to get a yearling doe through the winter than an older doe as the younger is still growing. The big picture result being more food for the trophies and older animals.A key to growing larger animals.
3. The older doe has a higher succses rate of rearing and protecting young...I.E. may be a better mother through experience. Giving a better chance of survival to those budding button bucks.
4. And my personal favorite...Young deer TASTE better!

Now I'm not going to shoot a fawn, but I'll try to take a younger one on occassion for the freezer. I'm not a trophy hunter, but I do love the challenge of outsmarting the older wily ones as well ( although they seem to have outsmarted me thus far this season!)

Maybe this is off topic, but I'd be curious as to everyone else's pont of view on this theory.I'll post it seperately if anyone thinks it is. Again, I'm not casting stones by any means, just some food for thought.

I do not consider your input to be judgmental nor unduly argumentive. The best information is that which is the end result of looking at all sides. Ya gotta develop the "tude." The 'tude is, "Be damned your hackles may rise, I am going to have my say!"

Although I have not read any scientific facts that support your theory, common sense supports that you are not entirely wrong on (all) aspects.

However, I am totally confident that there are other does that are as qualified and will readily step in and take her (A-doe) place when she is gone. In fact, it is my contention that a matriarch doe is easier and sooner replaced then a “top dog” buck.

Additionally, if the matriarch doe has given birth to several offspring, her genes are heavily in the pool. Keep taking out the best bucks, the inferior bucks will start invading the pool.

The times that I have been burned and burned bad, were by older does. They stay smart all the time. In fact, I believe does have it over bucks when it comes to intelligence and survival skills.
The buck survives mainly by staying solitary and hid most of his life. A doe has to get out there and expose herself every day, with other deer, while constantly seeking food to survive and to feed her young. She is also out there training her young, not the buck. Bucks do not obtain their initial and long lasting survival skills from another buck.

Hunting bucks is cool, but I get some of my best thrills pitting my skills against a smart doe. If the 8-point buck I dumped last Saturday had went with the does when they (does) sensed something was not right, he might still be around. One doe from the group that cut away did get taken by my nephew, not because she was stupid, but because we had observed their patterns for 30 days and she ran into a “T” formation (ground blinds) three of us had set. We simply used a better down-field play that day.

c903

I have bohunted since 1963 with a short six year hiatis after the murder of my 13 year-old son in 1983; I rifle hunted for these years. And you have it right . . . I am hardcore to the soul. BTW I am 5'-5&quot; and she was the bigest doe I'd ever shot and I've downed plenty. Several of my hunting partners have said the same. SHE WAS HUMONGOUS TO SAY THE LEAST. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
