Default for the new guys

First a little about me I have hunted for almost 20 years now. Every one I have ever taken deer hunting has seen deer. I fill at least 1 or 2 doe tags every year depending on the number allowed. Almost all my hunting is on public lands in southern Ohio. Today’s topic is scouting most of all how to find a place hang your stand or ground blind. Most of the deer hunting I do is in early October. Here is how I find a new place to hunt. First, I take my binoculars in the early mornings and late evening to find the deer. Next, I take a Sunday during the middle of the day and go find a place between the deer and the bedding area without going in the bedding area if I can avoid it. Then I sit the stand I use a climber for the first spot I find then is when the real scouting begins. Most deer will fallow the same trails day after day not exactly the same trail but the same trials in the area. I am lucky I get time to scout and trim my shooting lanes. I do pace off a few yardages when I get there well I should say I used to I have a range finder now. That is how you scout on a tight budget. Now for the hard part, here is what you are looking for when you find a possible spot the does are the key they attract the bucks even in early October you will start seeing bucks with the does. As you look for a place to hang your stand, look for a trail the leads into the field if you find one mark it on your note pad or free map from the D.N.R. they will not be easy to see with all the growth in august and September. Now how to find a big buck tracks, tracks and more tracks big bucks have big tracks then look for the rubs on the trees chances are the next year you can ambush the buck making the marks on the trees. The key is to be where he is going not where he has been most bucks will use the same trees and use the same rub line year after year. I have a buck I have hunted for the last 3 years with a bow I seen him 4 times last year and couldn’t get a shot off seeing and shooting is 2 different things last years sightings have me ready to ambush him this year. I passed 2 other bucks waiting on this one to show and I regret not shooting the 9 pointer every day he was a nice 130 class buck but I was waiting on the big boy again. Now hunt the wind and enjoy your time on stand.
