You said you had a pro shop down the street. That is a good place to meet other hunters and archery fanaticswhile you are looking for a bow. Join a league there or find out where 3Dshoots are to meet more people once you get your bow. While you willget great advise here don't overlook what a Pro Shop has to offer you in your new quest.

Morgan... do you live near any farming communities? I'm not sure about the regulations or even the layout of CA, particularly the part of CA you are from (being IN the Appalachian Mountains myself) but perhaps there are some wide field stretches that you might get permission to hunt on

you have good luck finding a friend that can teach you the ropes.
Check around the sporting shops and see who all is there that can
help you out, and talk to as many as you can as we all have different
ideas. And welcome to the forums.

There are actually a lot of places, CA is not all cities lol I live in a desert city, about 30 minutes fromt the beach in the center of the valley with some long streches of nothing in other places
