Default Shawnee National Forrest?

Hello,

I posted this question in the Midwest section and didn't get to much info.

I was wanting to know if anyone had hunted around Golconda, Illinois. We are planning an archery trip there this fall. We are suppose to stay at Bay Ciyt Cabin in theShawnee National Forrest, Pope County.

If you have hunted this area and would know of a good location? Would anyone have any suggestion for hunting this area? I would just like a heads up before we get there. I know it's public land and probably need to keep an eye on the gear.Atopical map of the area would be nice also.

If anyone has hunted this area an has some pointers it would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks!
Craig

I've hunted the area, but don't have any specifics as I was on private land...... Southern Illinois is absolutely covered up in deer and is a beautiful place....... You will definitely see deer if the weather will cooperate..... I've seen some big bucks that were kill in Shawnee.....

I will vouch for Buck442's knowledge of the area, we went riding this Sunday down near Golconda and he showed me and old foundation that was where his dad went to school and where his Grandpa had a grocery store. They were in the middle of nowhere but he knew it like it was his backyard. He knows the area and is a formidable hunter.

I have hunted down in Pope county once and will be there again this year. All i know is the deer are every where in a shrot weekend I probably saw 15 deer in range. Beutiful woods full of life. Everything is pretty standard as far as movment, stratigies, and such. I know that I set upon some pretty sweet funals and had some luck. There is alot of land don't settle for apar location find the spot that gets you excited. My see you down there near rut...

Good Luck,

My roomate hunts there every year. You definately have to do your homework. It is covered in deer as well as hunters. Most are if its brown its down type too. Its tough for a buck to get to 3.5 years old but it can be done. They usually kill some nice 120-130 in 2.5 yrs and every once in while get a bruiser. If your really determined to get a monster check out the high fence operation right of the interstate on your way to Golconda. Just kidding!!
