Got a nice Doe.
Well, it was early Saturday morning. I decided since I only get to hunt 2 days a week I didn't care what the weather was I was going. I am in my stand 1 hour before shooting light with a nice steady stream of water cascading down my back and a nice breeze keeping me chilled. I was thinking what am I doing here but just as I was feeling like I wasted a morning a nice big doe walks into sight. She hung around for about 20 minutes eating acorns but not presenting a shot.
I finally had had enough of standing there with bow in hand so I sat down and lit a smoke and said to myself if she comes back over to me I will take a shot. No sooner did I light that smoke and she was headed right for my shooting window. A smoke always does the trick for me.
So she hits the opening and I raise my bow but all I can see is my pins and a big brown mass. It was only around 7:10 Sat. morning so there wasn't much light but I knew she was only 20 yrds away. I moved my eye away from the peep and looked directly at the vitals then re-aligned my pin on what I thought was vitals and released.
She jumped spun around and bolted. I saw the impact was high and back so I figured it was a fatal but not the best shot in the world. So I head back to the house to eat some breakfast then come back later.
When I got down I decided to check the arrow just for the heck of it. When I saw the arrow it was coated in bright red blood from tip to tail. I took about another 10 paces and looked out of the hedgerow into the field and there she was about 15-20 yrds from where I arrowed her.
Come to find out the arrow entered just above her entrails and since she was quartering to me it exited through her left hip bone and left leg. The 100gr Thunderhead destroyed the bones in her left leg and came out in near perfect condition with only a small bend in one blade.
I am very happy with my and now its time to go for some antlers.
Sorry for the long story.
Hunting is like life. You plan and practice thinking everything is just right and suddenly the wind shifts directions and it's all over.

RE: Got a nice Doe.
Congrats on the deer.
The short trail makes up for the miserable weather.
I passed Sat am. I didn't want to deal with being soaked and skunked. I guess you taught me a lesson. if you have the time, get out in the woods. Anything can happen. Oh...and take up smoking.<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
take care

Congrats on the doe, but there are a few things that I wouldn't suggest doing in the future.
1. <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>I moved my eye away from the peep and looked directly at the vitals then re-aligned my pin on what I thought was vitals and released. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>
Don't guess on the shot. This could have been a wounded animnal if you were not sure.

Taking a quartering to shot is always a little iffy especially in low light conditions.
But once again I congratulate you on your deer, just wanted to through in my 2 cents. FWIW.

Congrats on the doe! You sound a lot like me, firing one up when they refuse to cooperate, that works for fishing also, I smoke as little as I can on stand and only when the wind is right, I have actually put one out to take a shot more than once. I live by this one statement when it comes to hunting, the wind is your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to deer.

BobCo19-65:
You are absolutely right on both points. I felt awful taking the shot the way I did and it is only luck and the lord that allowed me to have such a clean quick kill (that femoral artery sure does bleed them out quick).
Tazman:
Yeah, the light up a smoke trick always works. I knew the wind was in my face and gusting so there was no way she would wind me. To be honest I was so uppset with her for keeping me standing at the ready for so long I needed a smoke to calm down.
Thank you for the kind words folks.
