who bowhunts alone?
just curious how many go alone...and what do you do when you bag a good one!
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I always go alone. I gut the animal and drag. Helps keep me in shape, especially when you down a 300+ hog. Drag one of those guys for about 200 yard and you get a major workout. Most of the time Ill quarter a big animal in the field and take it out in parts.

RE: who bowhunts alone?
ive always bowhunted alone, gut it and drag it to the truck, a rigshaw comes in handy too.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
about 99% is by myself. only a handful of times have i had someone with me. i gut it myself, walk home and get the 4wheeler and bring it home
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I bowhuntsolo 95%of the time; scout all of the time alone and shed hunt most of the time alone. An exception would be on a planned bowhunt with friends and I always set aside a week tobowhunt withmy brother.
I've killed bear, elk, bucks and turkeys while bowhunting alone and by far theelk are the most work followed second by heavier bears. Depending on the weather conditions and the location of the kill I either quarter the elk with the hide on or bone them out if need be and pack them out.I always keep my pack frame and needed supplies/toolshandy while archery elk hunting. If its cool enough I will often get help from a friend. It'sfairly common here to help out a friend with a critter, and I've always given them part of the animal for the help. |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I go alone if I have to. No problem. When I hunt from stands, I am 100% completely safe from the time my feet leave the ground. I do carry a few necessities including phone, knife, etc.
I have dragged deer out of the woods by myself, no problem there. I also have (even though I have forgotten it more times then not) a deer sled that makes things easier on myself. |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
99% of the time i'm alone. And even when i go with someone, we hunt different locations unless we're in the ground blind. If i get one i'll either gut and drag by myself or call someone to come help.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
Past few years I've started doing a lot more hunting alone. I'm in good shape and get the deer out myself. On occasion I've called my dad to come help if its a buck. I know he likes to come out and be a part of the excitement since he doesn't hunt anymore. It's more of a share the moment thing than share the work, when he comes out.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I have been hunting on my own from the start, no one in my family or friends hunts. But that’s all changing it sounds like I have finally convinced my girlfriend to give it a try this fall. ![]() |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
99% alone, I go my friends and I share a camp, but when it comes to actually hunting I go by myself. When I get a big one I will call my buddies to help track and carry out of the woods with me. and We have a tracking dog so that also helps...lol
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
If I'm bowhunting, I'm always on my own. When I get one, I just drag it out. Now, if I'm gun hunting (rarely these days), I'm usually at my uncle's, and the tractor and the trailer are a big help!
rankbull: Good for you, bud!! |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I hunt alone but i always make sure i tell the wife and kidswhat stand i'm going to hunt so they'll know where to find me in case of an emergency or should for some unforseen reason i don't come home.I also carrymy cell phone for that same reason. When i harvest a deer i drag it to a spot that i can get too with the 4-wheeler andthats how i get it out. If it's going to be a long drag then i call for some assistance:D. >--------> Mike

RE: who bowhunts alone?
I hunt alone. When I get one, I field dress it, then get some help to get it out.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I bow hunt alone but I don't go that far. Maybe 4-500 yards from the roads. I'm not a big guy but if I get a deer, I'll drag it myself even if it takes the whole day.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I hunt alone but when I varmint hunt, some people tend to join me.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?

|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
Most of the time I John Wayne it. Solo, if you will. I share camp with some other fellas quite often, but I am always in an area to myself. I enjoy my time alone. Lets me clear my head.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
75% alone, alot of my spots are only big enough for one person.25% of
the time with my second oldest son who I got into bowhunting two years ago.He didnt get nothing the first year, this year he got a nice fat doe and a 15" 7 pointer the boy is hooked:)One spot I hunt I can drive up to the spot to where I shoot the deer, so far has never been more then a 50yrd drag.If I have a long drag I call one of my sons, no matter what time it is or what what day it is one or both of them will come and help drag.;) |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
Alone, Gut and Drag!
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I always like to bowhunt alone. I think it really cuts down on scent. If I shoot a big one, I go back to camp and get my Polaris Ranger and winch it into the box.

RE: who bowhunts alone?
Never really thought about it, but i guess it's bout 50/50. I really only havefour frieds that hunt, one wont do mornings, the other relys on himself for a paycheck(I think he needs to priortise better...) and this past year th 7&10 year olds have even came along a few times, and a two hour travel to meet the other two, but if noone else is able to go it's still HUNT ON...
The two I travel to see, and I ALWAYS plan a four day weekend for BOW CAMP..in late OCT. so I usually only see or hunt with themat that time... |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I too bow hunt alone most of the time mostly because I use all my vacation P days sick days and swap days as much as I can during hunting season. My frends can't get that much time off. I have already worked it out that I have the hole month of Nov. off and I 'm slowly but surly working on Dec. When I get a deer I just do the best I can I gut it out and drag it out a little at a time and I'm the type who hunts at least 1/2 mile in the woods so it takes a while. (I'm not as young as I used to be) I bought a deer cart but I think it's more work trying to push that thing in the woods getting stuck on everything, there for logging roads and well maintained paths.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I hunt alone about 93% of the time and if i kill a big un i just drag him 400 plus yards to my house to clean him.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I do myself most of the time. Usually I am not far from the house, 40 yards or so, or close to the road I can pull deer to road then walk to get truck! [8D]
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I go it alone about 99% of the time. I have several buddies taht bowhunt, but only one shares the same woods that I do. We are really fortunate to have several really good woods to hunt that the landowners only give the 2 of us permission. We set up all stands together etc. Very rarely do we hunt the same woods together at the same time. But on some occasions we will hunt together and video each other. He is a school teacher and is taking classes to get his masters degree so he only hunts about 1/4 of the time that I do. Whenever me or any of my buddies or dad get a deer we start calling each other for the track job or recovery. It is cool to have everyone together for the recovery. My wife and daughter also go out with me once in a while early season, but once it gets cold they are done. But getting back to the original question, I am usually alone.

RE: who bowhunts alone?
i hunt by myself...never shot a deer ...don't like hunting alone, but you gotta do what u gotta do
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
This yearI did alot of bowhunting alone. My father has a bad shoulder and couldn't pull his bow back.
The doe I got I gutted and dragged to the road and he came up with his truck and we loaded it in the back. I have shot deer alone but they were small enough for me to load in the trunk of my car alone. |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
If you asked last year I would have said 100 percent of the time alone, however have started taking my son, 4 years old with me. I use a double bull blind when I take him. Have not gotten anything with him yet but hopefully that will change this year.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I always hunt alone, Someone always knows were I am at. IF I tag out I gut and drag, or get the4 wheeler.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
well my brother in law and i go together alot, but hunt stands that are atleast 400 yards apart. as for getting the animal out thats what they make 4 wheelers and horses for.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
ORIGINAL: Kamil i hunt by myself...never shot a deer ...don't like hunting alone, but you gotta do what u gotta do But yet when general firearms comes in, I go out to a deer camp out in the Blue Ridge Mts and rifle hunt with the guys out there. |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I never hunt with someone in my treestand...8^)
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I usually hunt alone these days. If I get a young doe I usually drag it out but on a big bodied buck I return home and find someone to help. Its getting tougher dragging one out even with a buddy as I get older.

RE: who bowhunts alone?
I usually hunt alone as well,I really enjoy my time in the woods to really get away from it all.
Sometimes on the weekends I will hunt with some close friends ,but will be spaced apart quite a distance from each other. As for getting deer out of the woods----Thats what friends are for, just a call away and someone to share your memories with and to help take pictures of your prize. I rifle hunt with a gang. This is one week full of fun with the guys. |
RE: who bowhunts alone?
Usually alone but it is always nice to have someone to go with. I live in NY now and most of my bowhunting buddies are back in the Midwest.
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I would say I bowhunt alone 98% of the time. I have a buddy that i hunt with a few times during the season..
|
RE: who bowhunts alone?
I tried bow hunting with my husband one time......not good. He's too noisy for me, and wiggles around a lot. So i've been bow hunting by myself for about 5 years and love every second of it. He's just a few miles away and he always comes to help me get my deer out......as I do for him. |
