In MI, there are thousands of acres that are owned by paper mills, such as International Paper and Louisiana Pacific owns lots of acres too, but all of this land is open for public usage without fee. Now I know the mills aren's timber companies, but they buy the land to later have it logged by timber companies. A private person, hunter etc. can lease this land from the mills and then they are able to claim it as their own private property, but otherwise, it's all public land to my knowledge. I guess i'm not familiar with the type of system you guys are talking about.

It would be nice of them to allocate some of the land for public use.. However, I agree with David, they are in business to make a profit. Another avenue you haven't touched on is the liability factor. What if someone kills another hunter on land made available to hunters, who then is going to get sued...

I am in business for myself, and liabilityis a large contributing factor is almost every decision we make.. We have become a sue happy society.

Again, I can see both sides, but in this day and age what controls decision's is the Almighty dollar.

Should legally owned private land be allowed to lease it out as they see fit is the question. Why WOULDN'T the answer be yes ?

If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem.

Here's an inspiration for you...

Gather all of your friends and relatives who are in your boat.
Get them to gather their respective relatives and friends as well.
Contact the TRCP (http://www.trcp.org/) (joining might be a good gesture).
Work with them to work with the timber companies to set aside some land.

Big companies don't get squat for just giving things away.
But they get brownie points from the public and the government for giving things away for good PR.

Apparently there are enough people in the good state of Kansas that feel the sameway I do andthis is why we have so much "Free" land to hunt on andKansas is in the top three or four states with some of the largest racks & body weight deerin theUS not to say anything about the hundreds of thousands of turkeys, elk,antelope, hogs, up land birds, ducks, geese, small game "Free" "Free"only to purchase a hunting license and a tag or permit "Free"and the gas money to get to the "Free" land to hunt on. I have killed them all and have never own hunting land or belonged to a private clubor spent a penny on a high dollar lease.This must really ruffle your feathersAce. Yes I think the hunters have rights as well as the tax payers have rights thats is what thiscountry was founded on andis about. You must belong to some private club or have a high dollar lease and "Free" huntingaffendeds you. Most timber Companies I know that own land for long term, also do timber management. This not only benefits the timber Co. but it also benefits the wild. Then select harvest also adds to those benefits.
Myself, my father, and my brothers all lease from a local timber Co. I'd like to thank them for the opportunity to hunt our own piece of private land. There's no way in heck we could afford topurchase a piece of land of similar nature, and pay the taxes to boot. Our lease basically covers the land taxes the Timber Co. pays for their land. This Co. is so leanant with us, they allowed us to build a hunting cabin on the land. They've allowed us to plant food plots, and plant tree's that'll attract wildlife such as apples. Its pretty much ours to use as we please, with the exception of cutting down tree's.
Leasing such land has become so popular the last I spoke to the timber manager of this Co. he informed me they had no leases left. They'd leased it all out! They own millions of acres in 2 states.
I'm curious to know why are attacking just the Timber Co's. What about the farmers that are now leasing land outto hunting clubs? Is that wrong as well?

Do a little research before you start casting stones my friend. That would include reading some of my past posts to find out what kind of person I was instead of calling me childish names. For the record, I hunted public land exclusively here in KY for the last 5 years until I was asked to join a lease where we could control how we managed the wildlife. It wasn't easy to come up with the money but I did and had the bestseason I've ever had in the woods.
And you're right, hunters do have rights. Unfortunately, free land forus to hunt onisn't one of them.

My hunting club leases from a major lumber co.and I think its the way to go.Our club has been in existance since 1954 and has always been on the same lease!We only allow 75 members at a time so it works out pretty good.We have about 6000 acres and and a great bunch of guys am glad
